My Trent 900 Turbofan..well almost

Postby Sprocket » Sat Oct 23, 2021 7:15 am

Hi All, long time no post. I recently stumbled on this magnificent 3D project on YouTube, a 3D printed turbofan engine, based on the Trent 900 as used on Airbus A380'S.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfItARqZUfU&t=440s (Contains the links to this project so I won't post it here.)

Inspired by this I dusted off my trusty 3D printer, (apply named "Moody Blue") and started printing and assembling. About 6 weeks to complete. Herewith some photos of my build.
It is motorized, electric motor mounted in the rear black mixer cone.

Wow!!!

Nice and very impressive! What did that cost in materials?

Thanks Pete.
I put the cost at just over £100.00. I used up 4 X 1KG rolls of filament (PLA) at about £17.00 a roll, plus some part use of two more rolls. Then the bearings, screws and nuts etc.
Running the printer itself, electricity, is not that high, and I have calculated it at 30p per ten hours of print. I estimate 200 hrs for this project, about £6.00.

But a very enjoyable project, requiring both printing and assembling and some head scratching.

looks good! though im not sure trent 900's have chevrons, looks a lot more like the Trent 1000 (found on 787's). Eitherways, it looks really great, good one

Thanks for the kind words.
I see what you mean about the chevrons. The original designer of the Nacelle designed and uploaded both the straight and the chevron type thrust reversers, giving us a choice. I chose the chevrons, so yes I guess my model is really closer to the Trent 1000 as you say.
Now there are even files available for a "working "thrust reversers, albeit operated by hand.

Thanks for pointing this out.
