When I was stationed at El Toro (yes, it
was an active MCAS at one time!) My friend Bill Baily (no not THAT one) and I would go out riding on the freeways just for the fun of it, and if a cop decided we were doing something wrong (yeah, yeah, 75 may be a TAD over the speedlimit...) we would let them chase us just long enough to find the nearest traffic jam. There was always one someplace in LA no matter the day or time. Once we lost the initial officer it was a small matter to take a random offramp and park behind a strip mall or supermarket and just wait a half hour or so, then back to base on the "Surface" streets as they are called (a non-freeway, basically). I learned a lot of LA that way! Had a lot of fun too.
Especially nice not having to wait to get gas, either. Cars would have to wait for the right odd or even day to fuel up, bikes could get gas anytime the station had it. Bill (a heavily muscled African-American, or as we called them, dark-green Marines) would put on a thick Jamaican accent (he spoke American same as I do, no accent at all) and tell them he wasn't going to pay them twice what was shown on the pump, they were trying to steal from him, Mon, and so on...Worked great. I stuck with him any time we needed gas, I can tell you that!
We rode Mulholland Drive more than once, too. Great ride, back then. Up in the hills overlooking LA at night, hairpin turns....FUN on a bike! Great, romantic spots for taking the young ladies after a nice dinner, movie, or whatever, too! The tighter the corners, the tighter they hold on!
Anyway, good drives to all, and even better flights!
