I feel deficient in the area of Nationalism, I've never felt it and I don't understand it. I'm not saying it's unimportant because clearly a large chunk of the world population think it is......I just don't get it.

How can it be possible to be a proud Scott or a proud Englishman (or anything else)? How can we be proud of a birth accident? Surely we can only be proud of an achievement like (say) bringing up children or building a garden wall. Being "proud" of the outcome of chance seems like an abuse of the English Language to me.

.......anyway the EU who are naturally very worried about outbreaks of European Nationalism can now breath easy. Perhaps they have learnt a lesson (I doubt it) in that: Their version of democracy needs updating, the power to change things needs sharing out a little better.

BTW: Sean Connery is Cool even when playing a Russian with a Shcottish accshent.

Scottish referendum: Scotland votes 'No' to independence

Scotland has voted to stay in the United Kingdom after voters decisively rejected independence.

With the results in from all 32 council areas, the "No" side won with 2,001,926 votes over 1,617,989 for "Yes".

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond called for unity and urged the unionist parties to deliver on more powers.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron said he was delighted the UK would remain together and said the commitments on extra powers would be honoured ...

You know, this used to be a helluva good country. I don't understand what's gone wrong with it. - George Hanson, 1969

For those who haven't noted my other posts, the Scots (part of my own ancestry) and their culture have long been international.

There's mair Scots living in the Americas than in Scotland. It's nai wonder that the Anglish want home rule for Hereford. O seein that Dundee stands alone as the sole "YES" voting city in Scotland, I suppose the cry will be "Home rule for Dundee united?"

Log can enlighten me, but I always think of Canada being a rather cold and snowy (uncomfortable?) place for most of the year...rather too close to the North Pole!....(compared to sizzling Arizona!)...!

Enlightenment: In the great white north, where the men are men and the mounties always get theirs. There exists a breed of men that are oblivious to cold and dark, men who in the traditions of true Scotsmen wear nothing under their women's clothing. It is they that coined the expression, aimed at those who throw nasturtiums on their ancestry, the expression, see, you! "UP YER KILT>" For your entertainment Foz

Shhh... particular events of the early 1940s alienated certain people from their country of origin; Berlin, NH, became known as Ber' lin, a pronunciation still extant with some of the older inhabitants.
