Apple's first iPhone will become obsolete on June 11, 2013.
Six years after it launched, the company appears to be set to classify its first-generation model as "vintage" in the US and "obsolete" in the rest of the world.

One of the reasons I'm not falling for this smartphone hype. You buy a new one tomorrow, it's old the next. I bought myself a new mobilephone last december. A nice little Nokia C2 for making calls and sending/recieving texts. It'll last for several years. It doesn't need an expensive internet subscription or whatever. I don't need to buy a new one every 6 months to keep up to date. In other words; Samsung, Apple, HTC, Blackberry, Nokia will never get rich selling phones to me.

All these phones, Blackberry,I-Phones and the such and all the craps "I meen Apps" that come with them are completely and totally
un-necessary. Sure.. its usefull to people with businesses, but for the 'average joe' well.. its un-necessary! And its even killing people!

This and a pay-phone, that's all ya need! It was alot cheaper and people weren't driving up the road while playing this thing and they
sure as heck weren't talking/texting on the phone while driving. Just sayin'

I just have a cheap and cheerful, (£25), pay-as-you-go, mobile phone, (I believe it even has a camera inside it!), which I leave permanently switched off, so as not to annoy me...or anyone else in the vicinity...

It still has the original £5 top-up fee, which never gets used!
(I have to make a quick dial-up every 6 Months, to keep the device current!).

If I go out for a ride on my Motor Bike, I carry it with me, just in case I have to phone for the vehicle break-down services to recover me and my Bike.
Otherwise its is just a shiny ornament; and if I want to contact someone, I always use my land-line telephone, and folks always phone me on my land-line telephone!

In between times, the silence if deafening....and I love it!... ...!

I find all these "finger-poking things" thoroughly annoying!

For voice communication, I am always in favour of two empty bean cans, and a long length of string...it worked in the past!

Despite me being college aged, I am behind my generation especially in phones...still have the good ol flip phone! She has handled being exposed to welding, milling, grinding, hot shell casings, a couple rivers, and a few hard impacts with a wall

The electronics and tech world is constantly changing due to new developments and also the need for each company to survive economically and keep up with the competition. The requirements, tastes, demands, etc. of consumers also changes over time. I don't think the tech world will ever stabilize, something new comes out frequently, and there's also new developments in tech itself. It's difficult if at all possible to keep up with it all.

That's what I like about my vintage guitars: they never go obsolete (Gibson: '54 Les Paul, '68 Les Paul Custom, '62 ES335; Fender: '65 Jaguar; Martin D35-S acoustic, and an incredible 1980 Robert Ruck classical guitar, all the real items, not re-issues, and other lower level guitars I had), and if you take care of them, they last forever.

Unfortunately, I sold all of them before they became very pricey vintage items. Yep, I cry a lot. Collectively they would be worth a fortune today.

Electric guitars really aren't classifiable as electronics, the tech involved today is pretty much the same as it was long ago, of course with some improvements there, but overall
the same concept.

When a tech item goes obsolete, you're in a position of choice: Can I, should I, keep using it, assuming it's still usable, or do I spend $ to upgrade or replace? Well, I guess it's like owning a car, it's gonna wear over time. Everything wears over time, but usability varies depending on the item. So there are usable items, vintage or not, and there's everything else.

I'm literally being forced to upgrade to another/newer phone. I've been using a Motorola Nextel i880 Boost phone for around 3 years
or so and like Paul I only use it when I really need it. the rest of the time its in its holder. I've been using the service for about 6 or so years

But just the other week I get a call on that phone saying that boost moble is ending the boost service for ever. that sucks cause I am one of
those rare people who doesn't have a credit card, so I have to 'Pay as I go'.

I love how they say "just go buy a new phone" like yeah.. No problem! I have two questions, 1. Why can't I just use my Motorola i880 with the new
service? 2. What the hell happens to all the (pre-pay) moneys that people still have on there accounts? I for one still have 18 or 20 bucks in my
pre-pay account! I guess there just going to Poket/Steal all are money. Un-Real!

I've had my cheap-o, £25, Pay-as-you-go, Mobile phone for a number of years now, and providing that I dial a number, (any number), at least once every 6 Month to retain the connection, it still seem to connect to the Satellite-in-the-sky, OK...!

I'm with Tracfone, it's good enough for my "never using a cell unless I have an on the road car problem". Sometime a rare LD call out, so I've piled up huge minutes on it. My plan is $100 US/year, but if you get 2 years, then $75/year, and unused time carries over.

I def would never phone talk while driving, it's dangerous enough with everyone else doing that, so it's only for road emergencies. The phone is a Motorola without anything fancy.

I don't even spend time at home on the land line, not even too sure why I bother with it, oh yeah, I think I need it for my alarm system.

My Mobile Phone a; "pay-as-you-go system". It just need topping up with a couple of £'s, at my local Supermarket, if, and as required. If I don't use it, it doesn't cost me anything.....
