Motoring, Walking, etc, GPS devices...

Postby Fozzer » Tue Apr 23, 2013 5:35 am

Hello Chums and Chumesses... :D ...!

Having got very used to Flight Sim flying all around the World, every day, using on-board Satellite Navigation for updating my precise aircraft position on an accurate terrain map....

...I would welcome any suggestions of a similar, low-cost, hand-held/pocket, non I-phone!, Garmin, Tom-Tom, etc, product for use on my Motorcycle excursions around the English countryside, on road and off road!
(Using a paper Map for reference doesn't show my present location!)

It would be useful to display a detailed "Ordnance Survey" style Map of roads and terrain...similar to the Flight Sim GPS Maps, showing my location in real time!

Many of my trips are on; "unclassified" roads!

Any suggestions?

Paul...lost in space....and probably time!.... :D ...!

Note: I only carry a simple, £25, pay-as-you-go; "Mobile Phone" for emergency breakdown telephone calls....(no expensive i-Phone-type gadets!).

I do use my phone apps (many free GPS apps for different activities -- amazing!)

But ... as the app is not an option ... why not go to Amazon UK and read what owners think ... (reviews)

Ta, for the heads-up, Pete!... ...!

..an excellent start....with prices...and reviews!.... :D ...!

Something I never thought of!

I've always used fold-up paper maps before, (with my trusty Compass), but they are difficult to handle on a Motor-Bike, in the wind and rain at the roadside, for quick reference!

Paul....still a bit old-fashioned!... ;) ...!

I still only use a proper Land Line Telephone for any communications, (apart from e-Mail).

I use a Garmin NUVI 255W GPS for driving. It's good here in the US for the lower 48 states. It's always amazing me how accurate it is. I was joking with my wife a few summers ago when we were traveling around trying to find some of the areas her ancestors lived. I said, "This darn thing has done everything but take us down a dirt road!" I'll be darned if the next turn wasn't a dirt road..... . To top it all off, it brought us out within sight of our destination.

It was kind of expensive a few years ago at about $179.00 USD and I also paid an additional $89.00 USD for lifetime maps. It would normally cost around $35.00 per update and it updates frequently to keep up with road changes.

Maps are available for almost every country and languages are also available for most all areas.

You can even set it to use a British accent..... ;)

Re: Thingy's

This is what I use to Navigate while I fly Flight Simulator FSX,,,,

I just spin it around real fast, ,,,, and keep watchin it spin - and try to keep up with where I think I'm at or "Supposed" to be !

It seems , I can never get to where I want to go, I'm always thousands of miles off -

I've here Flight Simming since 2002 - haven't left this chair,,all day & nite 24 hrs a day 7 days a week for 12 years now,,, I'm still chasing that little Pin Dot,, it just keeps Spinning and I keep Chasing it ~ ~ !!!

Just had a word, on the land-line telephone, with one of my fellow Motorcycling Sons, and he came out with a simple, low-cost alternative to the expensive GPS magic devices...

..a simple, magnetic, tank-top, "Map Pocket" (bag) with a transparent top, for housing my paper maps, printed maps, with notes, directions, etc..... ...!

Just goes to show...there's always a simpler, cheaper way of doing things!

...like this...>>> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Oxford-Tanktop- ... B003ZYTFVS

Off to the shops tomorrow!

Paul....Two heads are better than one!... :D ...!
