Minimum age

Postby gibbsy24 » Wed Mar 11, 2009 5:44 pm

Hello everybody,

I'm turning fifteen in a few months and im thinking off going to a flight school instead of doing drivers training. So I'm wondering if anyone knows how old you have to be to attend one. Thanks in advance!

You must be 16 to solo and 17 to get your pilot's license.  You can start lessons whenever you want, but you will be limited until those ages.  However, there have been those who did solo on their 16th birthday and received their license on their 17th birthday.

Recall reading where some sixteen year old soloed several different aircraft on his birthday- back in the days when fuel was affordable

If you start in gliders, you can solo at 14 and get your PP-Glider at 16. ;)

I think there is no minimum age to do some flying, as in, at any age I think you can take the controls (of course, this will be in the air at a very friendly altitude)

14 as far as I am aware is when you can start to log hours

16 for solo (ensuring you have a satissfactory medical certificate and have completed required lessons, have sufficient ability and are trained to use the radio)

17 to get your license (ensuring everything else has been completed)

Hey Man Im 15 and doing the same thing. My 16th birthday is june 6 and thats the same day I plan to solo. LOL 8.7 hours of flight time. You've got more than me keep up the good work, ive only got 3.5 but ive been doing very excellent with my flight training(thanks to flight simulator) and on my second flying lesson the instructor pulled the engine to idle on me midfield and said" you lost your engine, now what are you gonna do" and I made a perfect simulated engine out landing. God I love Learning how to fly :).

Man you guys don't know how lucky you are starting at a young age.  Do yourselves a favor and take it seriously, learn all you can, and remember there is no better method of learning then actual experience.  I didn't start til I was 24 and now I'm in flight school almost done with my multi-engine commercial.  You guys will be where I'm at by your 18th birthday if you stick with it.  Good luck guys ;)

I first went gliding when I was 14. Now i'm sixteen i've been up either 53 or 55 times. A friend of mine soloed a Ikarus just before he turned 17.
