I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong when entering the holding patter over Seattle during the instrument rating checkride. I'm flying back to SEA direst using 160 heading. After passing the VOR, I turn standard to 320 heading and this is as far as I get. The instructer tells me that I need to practice and try again. I always fail the check! Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated....Thanks

I can't answer your question...but many people have said there are flaws in the test

Go to the Help and Tutorials page here. Down in the fs2004 section there is a download called Inside the FS2004 Instrument Rating Checkride. It'll tell you everything you need to know to pass.

well, you stated you are flying a 160 inbound, so a standard rate turn to 340 is in order, you fly a standard 1min leg then turn back to the VOR

Ya, the whole training system in the sim is messed up. I had trouble passing the ATP stuff and it was easy in reality.

I haven't started messing with the checkrides yet, but here's an idea: why not grade yourself, based on the required tasks given in the lesson? you won't get the little virtual certificatre, but...
And yes, Clipper, the recip. of 160 is 340, not 320... or are you saying the instructor tells you you've blown it while you're still turning?

The holding pattern is it made up on the 160 or the 320, lets picture the holding pattern is on the 160 radial and you are coming inbound on the 320 and the holding pattern is right turn which is standard turn. so when you cross the vor you should see now that you are out side the race track so make a parallel entry for 1min then turn left to entercept the 160.If you cross the vor and you find yourself in the race track make a tear drop entry this is what the check ride is looking for. Think of the holding patter is a eye you have to cross the vor first before you can decide what entry to make. So if you poke you eye you get tears

Rotty I like that idea. A fun alternative would be to video it then let a real world pilot grade it. Like the instructor in the game, just not ridiculously strict.
