Hi all... ...!

Sim Flight Training.

Do you realise...

During the past 7 years of flying with FS '98, FS 2000, FS 2002 and FS 2004 for around 4-8 hours every day, 7 days per week, yesterday was the very first time I felt confident enough to try out a heavy passenger jet...a Boeing 737...!

My favourite aircraft have always been General Aviation, (GA), piston prop aircraft, such as the little Cessna 150/152/172's, in which I have accumulated the most flying hours...!

So after all that time flying the little trainers I reckon I have got most things sorted out by now, with regards to airframe limitations, human limitations, aircraft controls including power settings and trim, radio ATC communications, radio navigation, weather limitations, flying in IMC conditions, take-off, cruise, and landings, including instrument approaches, etc, etc....

All of this in the trainer aircraft BEFORE attempting to fly any of the large "heavy" passenger jets...!

How did I get on...?

Fantastic, no problemo...!

A perfect take-off from San Francisco International, then follow the Pacific coast, tuning the radios to the various VOR/NDB stations, tuning the autopilot, contacting ATC en route, etc, down to Los Angeles to perform a perfect instrument approach and landing on the correct runway!
Then off again from L.A. heading for Las Vegas, (Nevada), for another perfect instrument approach and landing.
...with a little help from FS Navigator along the way, of course...!

A very enjoyable trip...I may do it again..LOL...!

So there's a tip for all the budding Jumbo Jet flyers....Practice first on a Cessna Trainer until you have perfected your flying, and obtained your PPL Licence, including your instrument rating, ONLY THEN go for some more advanced training to obtain your CPL Licence for heavy passenger jets...!

All your passengers will then have perfect confidence in you to transport them comfortably and safely to their destination...!

...and have you tried the "Lessons" in the Flight Simulator...?

..There are some things in life that you know you will master given sufficient time.... ....!
...and then there are other things like "Helicopters".... ....!
...Funny machines with propellers on top.. ::).. which are specially designed to crash at every opportunity.... ...!

Been there, tried it, crashed it, given it up... ...!

Taken a tip from the birds....sticking with machines fitted with "wings"....they got it right from day one... .... ....!

Welcome to the sexy side of civil aviation Paul!

That's cool you ventured into the world of heavies for a while.  Personally, I get kinda bored with them sometimes... that's what's so great about flight sim.  It has EVERYTHING. lol  So when I get bored with small GA stuff, I can go fly a fighter for a few minutes, then a helo, then some aerobatics, and then try some heavies for a while.  I've pretty much found that, with flight sim, once you can land/operate one type, it's really quite simple to transition to everything else.  

And as for helicopters...  after flying the real thing and knowing exactally how it works and feels in real life, the ones on the sim are a PIECE OF CAKE! lol  Even the -206 and some download helis.  (Although most of them are way too freakishly sensative)  It's all about anticipation... nothing in a helo is a reactive input. lol  If you're reacting to a movement, start sayin' your prayers!  If you move the stick to the right, you KNOW you'll have to move it back to the left (more so) to stop it.

Fun stuff.  If you wanna give it a try again, the Robinson is extremely nice to start with.

The robinson is the only one I can fly, and not very well. in the Bell 206 I can crash.... and thats it, I cant get more than 10 feet from the ground.

BTW. rudder perdals make all the difference in helicopters, you really cant do anything without them.

Well, for once its my time to shine!! I can fly anything up too a 747-400, Cessna's and the Baron 58 (My Fave  ;) ) AND...

HELI'S!!!!!

Hey Fozzer,  as a matter of fact, tomorrow will be my first official day of FS9 Flight School.  Just as a point of reference by someone who has already been through all of these lessons, I was wondering whether you used the Cockpit view or Virtual Cockpit view during all of the lessons?

Virtual cockpit whenever I don't need to see an exact instrument reading, cockpit view when I do.

Unfortunately, no, I'm not a helo pilot.  I've only got a few hours in them, but man do I love 'em!   only problem is their cost.  :o
