What version of FS are you using. For fs2004, call up ATC and select create IFR route or from the menus open the flight planner.

Select your departing airport to anything closest to you. (don't worry about departure airport just yet... keep reading)

Then select destination airport to your desired location. Choose IFR and Find Route. Enter your current altitude and save.

When you exit the Flight Planner, You will be asked if you want to move your aircraft to the departing airport. Select NO!

You are now in an IFR flight.

Hope this helps.

They both will work perfectly, until you open windows.

I made that mistake once after a two hour flight.  >:( >:( >:( >:( ;D

Oh, and if you are using FS2002 then just select an alternate AP. Switching a VFR to an IFR only became available in FS2004.
