Airliner Sim lesson

Postby KennyJC » Fri Jan 21, 2005 11:32 am

The first lesson you take off in a 737 do a few turns and then decend to land.

The part I'm stuck at is the decent to land. He says 'decend at 1,500fpm, maintain 200 and set N1 to 35%'

I set decent to 1,500fpm and get 35% N1 but the speed just doesn't reduce to 200 knots. So even though the instructor didn't say so, I set flaps to 5... even then the speed dropped REALLY slowly.

So the instructor ends the lesson there, but not before I nose dived to the ground in defiance.

The spoilers are designed for this very purpose ::) not trying to poke fun. Sometimes don't listen to the game, as you are going down, SLIGHTLY raise the nose and ease back on the throttle, with the spoilers(Not full spoilers!!) this should drop your speed significantly, and quick enough your instructor won't complain.

I've never personally flown the lesson, but I'm quite handy with the fs 737, and I'll tell you this-power settings don't remain constant, especially on a descent. Try not just keeping N1 at 35%, try moving it around as needed and see if the instructor still yells at you.

BTW-flap speeds for 737 (as seen on fs reference sheet)

1-230
2-230
5-225
10-210
15-195
25-190
30-185
40-158

The jet lessons can be inconsistent as the modelled 737 is hardly as good as the MS default props. To get through the lesson you may need to start slowing down before Rod tells you to slow to 200. If he's picky about 35% N1, then you may have to add more flaps , and maybe trim up more to decrease speed.

The rule of thumb is to be at most 210kts 10-15 miles out of runway. http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~speedy/   -  "Geezer Guide v5"

Also to maintain 3 degree on approach, rule of thumb is 5 x TAS = V/S.    So at 200kts set AP to 5 x 200 = -1000 ft/min.
