There are several different way FSX installs.

RTM (Main DVD)
SP1
SP2
or
Acceleration

When you enter add and remove programs, click the box "SHOW UPDATES"

That will EXPAND the install and show you the updates.

You can then check to see if there is a button to remove the updates or not. If there is, then reverse the process and uninstall clean starting with the SP being shown and continue till all updates and the main program is removed.

If there is no "uninstall" button available for the update and the only one available is for the main FSX install, then use it instead which will remove everything at once. But as I posted above there can be differences because of the different SP's involved. I know with Acceleration its a ONE SHOT uninstall of everything but with the service packs and without Accel you would be wise to check and do it as I listed above removing the SP's first.

There is no limit to installing FSX on the same machine. and if you were ever queried for a new install code then you simply call and get one

These are posts from several years ago, I asume we're talking about win vista here. By now it's 2011, I'm running win7, obvioussly, and I get quite confused already...

I just read a post on the microsoft forums: some guy asking about how to instal FSX under win7 32bit and the asnwer from support was that it isnt compatible with win7.
I looked that up in the compatability centre and there it says that indeed the 64bit version is not compatible, but from the 32 bit, it says it is.

But what's the deal now? Is it, or isnt it compatible? On my system it seems it is, provided I'm still having some minor issues. And if so, does this article still hold up or is there an updated installation instruction for win7?

FSX will work with 32 bit and 64 bit Win 7. I don't have Windows 7 but here is a more recent thread that might help you.

FSX works fine under win7 64 or 32 bit but you cannot run 16 bit applications under 64 bit. Had an old cad progamme that wouldnt install under 64 bit because the installer is 16 bit. FSX must not be installed in the default folder under win 7 it causes security headaches, better on another drive, partition or folder outside of programme files. And you dont need any service packs with accelertion, it has a slightly different ver of sp2.

I would recommend deleting FSX, THEN DE-FRAG, then re-install.
And in the future, back up any modified aircraft before defragging, because I have lost aircraft data from defrags. Always a good idea to back up anything on your computer before a defrag. Sometimes the data just doesn't get re-writen correctly.

After reading several of the posts i see that it would be advantageous to install FSX on another drive. My question is would it be necessary to uninstall FSX from the c drive before installing on the other drive. I have read all of the procedures and have a vacant drive for it.

There are three types of FSX, Pro, Deluxe, and Gold which includes acceleration. The Acceleration pack has some aircraft, missions, and functions not in the the others.

Back after a few years of hibernation. Got a question that google cant seem to answer for me, those of us that accidently bought the standard edition when the game went live (facedesk) are we able to update to deluxe/ acceleration or are we stuck with what we have. Not really looking forward to rebuying the game but will if its necessary.

You can painlessly update with the Acceleration disk ;)

I also bought the standard edition and was disappointed that the Acceleration expansion was needed to get the FA-18 >:(
