My thumbnails in FSX do not match up to the aircraft. Must be an easy solution but this never happened in FS2004.

It's because theres no thumbnail for that aircraft. All you have to do is get any picture in a JPEG then rename it thumbnail. Then put it in the texture folder of your plane thats missing

Yes.
Fire up you ac, take a nice pic outside (using "v") and put that pic into your ac texturefolder as "thumbnail.jpg".
You need to do that on each, if you have more paints of the same ac and if you want to see 'em all.

OK thanks I guess previous installed a/c are missing thumbnails. I have installed quite a few from FS9 that are keepers but probably don't contain thumbs

Also, reducing the Size of the Thumbnail to really small I heard helps load times too, like thumbnail size ! Don't forget ,, those Thumbnail JPEG's go into each aircrafts TEXTURE folder for each paint job, and lastly IMPORTANT for FSX users - the JPEG photo has to be called "Thumbnail", or it WON'T show up in your Aircraft list !!

It's a corrupt thumbnail.jpg file. Check the plane from which the thumbnails start to get screwed up, go to that plane's folder and delete/replace the thumbnail.jpg file that's in the texture folder.
I had that problem when I my OS was infected by a polipos virus and I had to recover stuff using the command line because the explorer.exe was destroyed. Some texture files got corrupt. For example I had planes that the textures were corrupt to the point where the plane appeared as TV-like noise:
