Is there any way to have smoke visible ALL THE TIME-
without pressing "I"?

You should be able to turn your smoke on, then save it as your default flight.  After that, any time you start, the smoke should be on, and if you change aircraft, if they have smoke, it should be on, also... I think!  :)

Yes, that makes sense, but only on the default flight.

seems to me there should be some way to convert the .cfg file for the smoke to be an 'effect'?
Doesn't it?

Hmm, even the "save flight" idea didn't work. :P

The "smoke" is already an effect, and can certainly be added to any aircraft.cfg.  I'm surprised that saving a default (using the Extra 300) with the smoke on didn't spawn with the smoke on, or smoke on with anything else with smoke on after selecting a different aircraft.

What type of smoke are you wanting to display?...under what conditions?

Something like engine smoke?
