"Microsoft Flight Simulator X has encountered a problem and needs to close..."

As you can tell by the subject, I'm having a problem where FSX just freezes and I get that error message. I've heard that it may be because of low RAM. Any help? :-?

This usually happens when I load a flight for the 2nd or 3rd time.

It may well be your running out of memory. My suggestion other than add more ram, would be to download CCleaner if you don't already have it.

Then after you have flown one or two flights, close FSX, run CCleaner and try again. It would be a good idea to run CCleaner before you fire FSX up the first time as well.

FSX has a tendancy to crash sometimes if you reload incredibly complex aircraft over and over again.

You can try this:
[GRAPHICS]
HIGHMEMFIX=1

I donno if that works tho.

Try updating graphics drivers.

Also CCleaner doesn't reduce RAM usage.

Also CCleaner doesn't reduce RAM usage.

I never said it did. What it does, is clean temporary files, history, cookies, download history, form history from your browser, and recycle bin, recent documents,

temporary files, log files, clipboard, DNS cache, error reporting, memory dumps, jump lists from Windows, among other things. It makes all the ram that was being

used for storing temporary files available again.

I've got 3Gigs of RAM and my memory usage on FSX never goes past about 60%. I'm quite sure FSX only recognises only 2GB of RAM so upgrading would be pointless. After I quit FSX, the memory usage goes back to about 20% so FSX is fine if I start it again without using CCleaner. I use CCleaner once a week though.

Sorry, I'm using XP. I'll keep that video in mind if I upgrade to Windows 7 though.

I open the control panel and look into the problem report history to see what's what with what.

Recently figured out that double-clickin' on the entry line opens a box that's full of way more than enough info to help/guide/whatever me through to a fix.

Most of the times it's me messing up something. :D

There's even a help section for dummies like me to see what to fix/undo/redo so I don't do it again. :P

Can't recall how XP has a control panel setup.  It's our OS at work, but if it goes belly-up we just hafta call someone.

I have Vista.  In the control panel there's a "System and Maintenance" section, then "Problem Reports and Solutions" which has a sub shown as "View Problem History".

Once I click on that, it scrolls open and shows me everything that has had an 'issue'.  Like I said before, I just recently discovered that double-clickee on each line opens up the particulars of each logged problem.

Like for example, here's what the last one looked like for an FSX "fatality":

Problem signature
Problem Event Name:      APPCRASH
Application Name:      fsx.exe
Application Version:      10.0.61637.0
Application Timestamp:      46fadb14
Fault Module Name:      visualfx.dll
Fault Module Version:      10.0.61637.0
Fault Module Timestamp:      46fadb59
Exception Code:      c0000005
Exception Offset:      00014857
OS Version:      6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID:      1033

Extra information about the problem
LCID:      1033

The vast majority of the time it's something I've done! :D  In this particular instance it was tinkering with the Solomon Islands 1943 scenery that did it.  The fix for me on this one was to un-tinker the AI ships and delete then replace the fsx.exe and visualfx.dll files.

I have learned a lot from screwing stuff up in FSX. 30% being learn-by-doing and 70% from the smart people on this site! :)
