What do you do when..

On my approach to KMDW today about 300 feet from touchdown after a 4 hour flight, ATC tells me to go around for another aircraft that's landing. Where was the aircraft in the air? NOWHERE TO BE FOUND!....

What do you do?! ;)

follow what the ATC says
makes it more realistic
it can be annoying sometimes but thats the rules

In the olden days I still used the default ATC and saw a small Piper or Cessna in front of me about to land, to avoid the default idiots in the virtual ATC ask my B747 to go around, I would simply enter the date and time menu and press OK. This simple maneuver would force the sim to recalculate the AI, leaving the glideslope free for my Jumbo to land. ::)

Some other times, when in the distance I saw a plane had already landed but was still dallying on the runway without finding in itself the strength to get the <expletive deleted> off the tarmac, once the approach handed me to the tower... I would NOT switch, land tranquilly, brake WAY before the apocalyptic dingleberry taking a tea on the runway and contact directly the ground once off the runway myself. ;D

Been a while though from the last time I frustrated myself asking the virtual imbeciles in the badly simulated tower anything. Nowadays I either fly on-line or, if off-line, without using the ATC anyway. 8-)

correct me if im wrong but doing that would still cause the ATC to send you on the go-around

Nope. Given that between your big iron and the runway there's one or more way slower and too close interloper, enter the date and time menu and without making ANY changing press OK, the sim will interpret this like a changing of time anyway and will recalculate ALL AI, freeing the way between your plane and the runway previously occupied by that (those) troublemaker(s).

If you do this BEFORE the ATC calls for your head for go around, you're always given clearance to land. ;)

Oldest trick in the rack. 8-)

In my sim, I'm known as the incursion king! :D

ATC, shmayTC! ;D

When they tell me to do a go'round, and things are VFR, I have a look-see to determine who the problem is.  Most times it's some doofus pulling out onto my runway.

Depending on how things look, I may just respond back that I didn't understand the last instruction and finish off my approach/arrival.

More than a few times I've dropped it in over departing traffic only to have them climbout over me if I fail to clear in time........or worse if I trajically fail to clear in time. :o

Livin' on the edge is not only my state-of-mind, it's also my way of life.  I get bored otherwise. ;)

ahh i understand now
i thought you did this AFTER the ATC told you to go around lol

My mistake

There's a way to avoid this, and is to adopt the same hard-nosed tactics and strategies the AI planes use showing no mercy on anyone.

Think about it... if you collide against an AI, what does it happen?

If your plane has the damage active and its model allows for it, it will lose some part of itself (the default C172 will sometimes lose a whole wing) and while you cry bitter tears... the AI goes away completely unscathed. :-?

The tearing of a wing, to worsen everything, happens even if the collision happened at a speed that barely a dent would have resulted... but the cursed AI ALWAYS gest away scot-free... :(

This bespeaks of low quality collision routines that hold a catastrophic bias towards the AI, and so undeserving to be active, under my humble point of view. >:(

Enter your realism menu and enhance the realism of your sim astronomically DEACTIVATING all collisions. On maybe on a better engineered software they might have been worthy keeping alive... but on what we DO have... not really... and USE YOUR INTELLIGENCE and judgment to understand if and when you have struck something, and the force with which you did, and take a fair decision on the question if your plane would would still be still able to fly or not and your simulated status among the virtually still living beings as well. ;)

Yeap, the same thing happens to me, mostly at busier airports which can be expected, but in FS9 you got the goaround if you came in line behind another aircraft and that aircraft just touched down, (or was rolling down the runway looking to taxi) which in my opinion was a bit more realistic. But the ATC in FSX is just plane ridiculous (no pun intended) ::). If I'm at decision height and the runways insight after I've been cleared to land I'm landing. I've been directed to land on water even thoe my aircraft isn't equiped with poontoons. And fegedabouit if you filed a IFR flightplan, you'll get sent 100nms out on a goaround and an ailtitude change 10,000' above the airfield elevation ( sucks when your burning up your reserves and your landing on fumes). Also what about the taxi and hold dance! HOLY MOLY!, at a large airport you'll be an hour into your flight be for you even take off! Also the AI chatter just gets to monotonous after awhile (nothing like hearing a cessna doing touch and goes for an hour) :D So anyways, these days I only use the ATC when I'm flying around my home base doing test flights. Other than that, like Strategic Retreat said, I mostly fly online. It's much more fun chatting with other simpilots that are out there on those long cross country flights. And once in a while you get some real intelligence up in the tower when someone wants to be ATC.

I would normally go around but a few days ago, I was finishing a flight and ATC told me to follow so and so in. He was a big guy, not sure type but was moving much faster than my Saratoga and was way ahead of me. So I lined up, got nice and straight and was making a beautiful approach and I noticed he had stopped on the runway. Nice distance out, more than enough time for him to move. Getting closer, he's still sitting. Get to the fence and I get the go around. Not in this lifetime, I hit it dead center and lay on the brakes. I think this bird's engines were actually sucking me in but I stopped behind him. He was sitting at a taxiway doing who knows what up there. I drove around him and hit the taxiway to parking. ATC reamed me but they didn't say anything to the guy out there doing who knows what. But still, normally, I would go around.

Well, seen the relative positions his engines would have (in real world) blown you away, not sucked in, and you finally aired the worst part about ATC at last. If someone else screws up, the fault is yours and you must get the hell out of the <expletive deleted>, if you do not, then they try and rip you a new one (and personally, the last times I was using that ATC I answered back in the most colorful way that I dare not detail here under the fear of real censure... just a shame they could not hear me)... but only to you. The source of the problem was on his own turf in doing what he was doing. ::)

A little too biased, those bastards in the simulated tower, if you ask me... >:(

Default ATC is a catastrophic heap of manure, and I have the sneaking suspicion that M$ dares not touch it, and justifies this indolence with the presence of free online ATC services, just because they KNOW the actual Artificial Idiocy Intelligence routine cannot get any better and they would have to redo everything from the start to get something the way it really should be... and the sole thought of all the work that would mean, and all the golf matches they would have to cancel or never even begin to contemplate starting would be so depressing... better sell for new a AI routine that dates back to FS2000 and [shoddily] retouched there and there to look new... like a car cheaply repaired after a crash and then hastily sold away under the excuse it's not necessary anymore. :-X

If this were real-life or say, VATSIM, I'd go around.  BUT since this is FS, and because mr. virtual air traffic controller is an idiot, I normally land anyways if: a.) I don't see anything on the runway, or b.) there is something on the runway but there is plenty of room to make some hot-shot maneuver (like dodging the oncoming traffic or holding short of the oncoming traffic!)

Most of the times, the ATC would tell me to go around because they either position me too close to an aircraft on final or if another aircraft behind me tries to cut me off.  In that case, my virtual air rage goes off and I start flying aggressively  ;)

With regards to the ATC stupidity,  I thought I'd try the local airport to where my dad lives which is Barnstable, Massachusetts, but starting from another local airport.

The map view showed no ils so took rough bearing from my starting point intending to overfly and land.

I decided to switch GPS ON and low and behold - 2 green ils arrows, tuned atis, runway 15 in ils use, so back to map view, got the frequency for 15 and approached Barnstable, called up atc who wanted me to use runway 33, nope I decided, I went for the 15 approach.

In front of me on finals to 15 was a light twin, I continued, now if I had gone for the 33 as atc wanted, I would have been head to head with the twin.

So do we ignore atc or just judge each atc request as we get them?
