Adding Aircraft

Not sure if this is in the correct category, but...
I understand designers may set up the file structure of the airplanes they make in different ways. But I seem to have a fairly high failure rate when I try to add planes downloaded from this site. I'm sure it's my fault, I'm not an expert on the file structure as mentioned above. But it seems like the majority of the planes I try to add don't make it complete. Sometimes there is no sound, sometimes there are missing gauges, etc...
One plane in particular is ANY version of the A-10. I have tried several versions with 0% success.

What operating system do you have? If you have windows 7 or something similar check out this tutorial video I made. I think it explains things pretty well. It's also in 1080p HD. :)

Heres my tut. on how to add missions to FSX, if you need that too:

I am flying in FSX and I'm using XP. Thanks for the info. Why isn't there a standardized file format? Wouldn't that make additions easier? I guess that would have had to come from Microsoft and they probably wouldn't approve of modifying their software...

Thanks again.

As a complete newby I dont find the art of adding aircraft to fsx in Win 7 all that difficult, ( that is after taking all the various differing methods into consideration, which is another subject altogether), what I find difficult is to get them either working, or more to the point getting "painted" aircraft as opposed to just "silver" unpainted ones in the pre fly screen, any suggestions as to where I am going adrift would be gratefully accepted, TIA for helpfull repleis

Are they silver when you fly, also?  It could be a DX10 thing.  I've never fooled with it, so I'm not sure exactly where it's located, but on the user control panel, there's a "DX10 preview" option.  Make sure that is off.

Try disabling DirectX 10 Preview from FSX Display settings.

Direct X unchecked, the aircraft is now as it should be, well at least to look at, totaly uncontrolable when trying to land in the verticle, swings about side to side up and down, as if it has a mind of its own, maybe Im doing something wrong, Ive re calibrated the "Attack 3" joystick, Ive checked all the buttons for the designated operations of each of them but old Mr Harrier, ( or any other VTOL Inc choppers) still won,t do as instructed, I am thinking of buying a bycycle for the simplicity, come on someone, tell me where Im going wrong cos I really dont wanna bike at my age

It would help to know which Harrier you're talking about. Have you got the file name?

Might be an idea to start off with a conventional aircraft.

The file name is  IRIS_Harrier_FSX, I found no Insatll NFO with this even after unzipping it, ( There is a Manual), I just copied and pasted it into the FSX Airplane dir, ( maybe this is where I went wrong), but the craft looks superb, I can get everything working (intermittently) but far from "perfect" and perhaps your right, I should walk before I run, but what the hell, lifes a challenge "aint it" ?  By the way thanks for the input

Rather funny, two / three days ago I grabbed a "Jump Jet" file, which one it was I dont know as I grabbed a bunch of them at the same time, the one in question loaded perfectly, it had all the markings, it looked great, I didnt have to mess about with DirectX ( I didnt know then that it was part of the equation), this particular one flew perfectly, landing and take off where no problem, I have no idea what I did, but since then the U no what hit the preverbial fan, not to worry, we will soldier on, maybe I will find that previos file, by the way, can aircraft be deleted from the FSX / airplane dir without causing any problems?

You can safely delete any 3rd party aircraft from FSX. I wouldn't recommend removing default aircraft.

Well guess I,ll just have to put up with a page full of pictures that are shall we say, " surplus to requirments"  hahaha, any way, fsxharrier ( file name ) although Ive had problems getting it to take off from stationery on the hard, is manageable in the verticle landing mode, and does give a somewhat reseambalance to a verticle TO, just thought i,d mention it, thanks again for the input, cheers
