Hi,
So the way that turbulence in Flight Sim kind of irks me. It just hits out of nowhere and then it's gone. I do realize that that is how turbulence works, but I have to think that pilots usually get some kind of forewarning before they hit the big bumpy patches... Or is it just guesswork?

Cheers!
Having just taken a very bumpy ride in a United B757 from SFO to JFK and
listening to "Channel 9", the ATC comms, pilots only get an idea of what
is ahead by being alerted by ATC after ATC gets alerted by other pilots that
have hit turbulence in their sector. We're not talking severe weather stuff that
can be seen on the radar, just clear air turbulence.
I almost always listen to Ch. 9 when I am on a United flight and it
is always the same. My pilot: "Center, United 6 with you at flight level 290.
How's the ride ahead?"
ATC: "United 6, Center. No reports of turbulence".
A short time later another pilot:
"Center, Jet Blue 235, we just hit some moderate turbulence here at 290."
Later another pilots asks about "the ride". ATC: "We've had reports
of moderate turbulence from Peoria extending 50 miles to the east at flight
level 290".
ATC will often query aircraft in their sector as to conditions
at various altitudes and relay that to other aircraft along the route.
That's the way it works. Of couse it doesn't in FSX
