Is there anyway to answer ATC when they contact you on an IFR flight? Many times I do long flights and alt + tab out of the game to do other stuff and come back when there's roughly an hour left before landing.

I find that in my GA, VFR flights I can mostly navigate myself around the countryside safely with or without ATC's help and advice...(Flight Following)....

But having filed an IFR Flight Plan, I have to stay awake, and be aware to instantly respond to ALL ATC's instructions, minute by minute, throughout the whole flight!

A missed communication with ATC and all Hell breaks loose in the Radar Room!

I Take off IFR and have all the clearances and then once at altitude I cancel my flight plan and just fly vfr.  ATC does nothing for you during the cruise part of the climb.  Then, somewhere around 100-150 miles out I refile my ifr plan and get clearance and follow atc's instructions for decent and landing.  Just make sure you say "no" when FS asks you if you want to move your plane to the starting location.

Another way around it is to not change frequency's when ATC hands you off after you reach your final cruise alt clearance. This way you don't need to refile the plan, just switch to the current freq about an hour out and ATC will continue to control you as though you had been there the entire time.

sim: take the advice of the other posters that are trying to help, i dont really have anything else to contribute.

Real life: get someone else to fly with you so that THEY handle all the radios and Autopilot, while you take a nap, or send a text message, or check your FACEBOOK page (wait, was that our airport that we passed 15 min ago? DAMN IT!  )

Actually I think there is a way to do this.  It involves some payware.

Multi Crew Experience has a copilot that is able to handle the radios for you if you ask him to do that.  You just say " you have the radios" or something like thjat and he'll handle all ATC stuff while you fly the plane.

Might just be what you are looking for.

At the moment, for my short inland hops in my light, General Aviation, single/twin prop, Aircraft, I am enjoying practising my filed, IFR flights as a solo Pilot.
It is a busy task, flying the aircraft, and keeping in constant touch with ATC and Radar, necessitating making constant written notes of each incoming Radio instruction and complying with them for the duration of the flight.

A completely different experience to flying ones own route under VFR Rules, with occasional assistance from Flight Following!

It is an enjoyable and educational experience, which requires constant attention to detail!

IFR Flights: Well worth a try, for we usual VFR Pilots!
