Well, I went and did it. Picked up my copy of FSX Gold last saturday. Needless to say, coming from FS9, I'm sure to be a major pain in the FSX forum's heinie!

I found it to be quite frustrating, even on a top-end system. But as per advice from other members, you just have to relax, enjoy and realize that it will never run 100% even on the best.

I have to say that the demo really didn't do it justice. I'm still in the install phase on a clean system, and like a kid on Christmas morning, I couldn't wait to try it out. I'm impresssed so far!

Welcome to the dark side

After the installation, you'll have to go through another painfull update process, in order to install all of the major fixes/improvements for FSX.

When this is done, you'll start enjoying your flights.

Don't get disscouraged, I run my sim just fine with XP Home Version sp3 x32 on a 2.2g 1k ram machine with an ATI 256 videocard. Just read up on NickN's tutorials. It takes a bit of time to fine tune, but it's well worth it, and were here to help you out when your ready to start banging your head against your machine!

I'm finishing up the defrag runs now, but even before I started tweaking anything I gave it a go and was really happy to see how well it was doing. I was a bit nervous from hearing the stories about poor performance, but even with settings trimmed way back, FSX still looks better than my FS9 does maxxed.

I'm gonna like this me thinks! I'm not looking forward to having to learn about a new sim, but I still can't wait to do it so I can start modifying!

I just put my gold package on yesterday/Tuesday & am scratching my head. But I do love the way it is running. After years of FS9 it will take some getting used to.

I'm running it on XP Pro/SP3...it's doing great

I started flight simming with fs98, moved on to 2002, and really feel in love with flight simming when I got fs9 (2004 a century of flight), and fs9 was when I started to learn that you can tweek your sim to get the best out of it. FSX takes just a bit more but the effort is well worth it, I loved fs9, but now that I got FSX flying as smooth as a baby's behind, I haven't used fs9 in 2years,guess it's time to pull it out of the machine , sometimes ya just gotta let go!

Well, I gave it a go at least. Performance is ok on my system, and the eye candy is a huge step up from FS9, HOWEVER, it comes down to this: it simply isn't as enjoyable to me as FS9, and isn't that what it's all about? Maybe it just too "new" for me (never did like change all that much) but with the YEARS of time and effort (and $$$) I've put into "9", it's become like a old friend to me, all familiar and fuzzy. I just don't wanna make the switch yet.

I'm sure I'll keep X on my system, but my time spent simming between 9 and X will be about 98%/2%.

You don't need to make a 100%, one-step switch to FSX at all.
The real goal is to take your time to discover the new sim and all of its addons. The VFR experience in FSX will quickly show you the benefits of the new sim, especially if you manage to install the various sceneries already available. The photoreal terrains (the real FSX ones, not the FS9 ones) will also show you the difference (provided you like photoreal sceneries).
FS9 will keep the best for IFR in case you fly from the major airports, though.

I have purchased all the M$ Flight Sims as soon as they are released...

...FS '98SE, 2000 (complete with is 322-page Manual!), 2002, 2004, FSX....

And always had no difficulty in Installing them and running them on my various Computer specs...except for FSX...and reading the FSX Forum from day one, and noting all the myriad of problems and frustration experienced by users, plus the fact that some of my most important Payware Programs were not written to be compatible with FSX, I have stayed with FS 2004 together with my years of collecting add-ons for it!... ...!

I do give FSX a run every now and again, but it doesn't give me quite the same "thrill" as FS2004, and previous versions,..... probably because of all the constant FSX Forum and Hardware Forum arguments and fights regarding it!... ...!

Like an old flame, its being familiar with FS 2004, for so long... ...!

It is, and always has been about the hardware.

FSX is an "Install and go" program, that runs just fine, on computers running near 4GHZ, with modern video-cards... and is a simming experience in another league.

Problems and frustrations come when people are determined to MAKE it work, on FS9 capable computers...
