reverse thrust

is it just me, or does the reverse thrust function (activated by pressing and holding f2) sometimes not work so great, particularly on the A321?

I mean, that aircraft is probably not really meant to be landed on 4,000 foot runways anyway, but it can be.  If the reverse thrust doesn't foul up, anyway.

You can check the function in the cockpit: pull the thrustlevels to idle and then beyond the idleposition for reverse thrust. Your engine instruments should behave like a normal run-up...  ;)

thanks, I'll double check!  not having the throttles at idle might explain it, actually, since it doesn't happen all the time, just once in a while...I probably ought to just get a better joystick/throttle quadrant...

Just remember brakes account for 60% of stopping power, reversers were originally designed to help reduce wear on the brakes.

Have you tried to setting up a button on your controller for  Throttle (decrease quickly)

Just exactly what is the proper use of reverse thrust in FSX?

After you are on the ground, throttle at idle and you press F2 do you then increase the throttle to full power for full reverse thrust or what?

You just continue holding F2 for full reverse thrust.  Here is how it works on most aircraft in real life.  There is a lever on the throttle that when pulled allows the throttle handle to be pulled back past idle, into reverse, the farther back you pull, the more thrust.  In the sim, F2 does the same thing, it pulls the throttles back.  Once you are at idle, F2 can keep pulling back into reverse.  Clear as mud right...?

Most Aircraft Manuals will tell you right after touchdown to apply reverse thrust, as much as you need, and after you hit 60 kts, you cancel it and just use your brakes and spoilers.

If I'm not mistaken most Airline pilots try not to use the brakes too often, (Those friction brakes are expensive!) preferring to let the combination of flaps, spoilers, and reversers do the work, and exit the runway to a taxiway at about 25-30kts. Then they add a touch of brakes to bring the aircraft to a stop so that they can perform the taxi-in checklist, and communicate with ground-control.

I have found the FSX default planes to be a little weak on the reverse thrust.  You can always adjust the number in the aircraft.cfg file.  For the A321 I use:

[GeneralEngineData]
//min_throttle_limit = -0.25                      //Minimum percent throttle.  Generally negative for turbine reverser
min_throttle_limit = -0.35                      //Minimum percent throttle.  Generally negative for turbine reverser
