Postby Joenavy85 » Sun Dec 13, 2009 7:54 am

i have FSX installed on my laptop and would like to put the aircraft on an external hard drive(since they take up a lot of room on my HD). how can i do this(if it can be done)?

Open your fsx.cfg file (located at C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX) with notepad.

Press ctrl+f and search for "User Objects=Airplane". It should actually be at the top few lines.

The lines below User "Objects=Airplane" should look something like these:

SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes
SimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\Rotorcraft
SimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehicles
SimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\Boats
SimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\Animals
SimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\Misc

Change the line "SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes" to the location of your desired aircraft folder, like "SimObjectPaths.0=D:\Airplanes"

No problem. Actually, I believe you could also add the line "SimObjectPaths.6=....." and FSX will actually look at both folders.

Can this be done, and is there any benefit to doing this, with say, Addon scenery?

It is very simple actually. All you have to do is to select the proper folder at the scenery manager that is built into FSX (after you click on "Add Area).

Ok, that definitely makes sense. But is there any real benefit to having it on another HD?

I don't know, never tried it... I'd guess though there might be a small performance improvement if that other physical (as in, not just another logical drive, like a different letter) HD  has a better reading speed. I hope that makes sense.

Yes, makes sense and what I was thinking = another physical HD, but I'm thinking that the bottleneck is probably the Cpu in most cases.

Just looking for opportunities to enhance performance.... :)
