A way to change how ATC handles IFR flights?

Postby DeepSpace » Tue Nov 24, 2009 5:28 am

Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to decrease the amount of default ATC screwing up IFR flight-plans by decreasing the distance it starts giving out vectors for final approach? (XXX you are XX miles from XXX)

Thanks :)

Nope.

How exactly is that screwing you up anyway?

Because it's not so realistic to get vectors when you are some good 100 miles from your destination, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed it. Also it will tell you to change headings every few minutes.

Many large airports start vectoring in aircraft 100+ miles out every day. That's not unrealistic at all.

The constant heading changes however are. The best I figure FSX ATC can't adjust for wind so as you get blown off course the heading changes are just getting you back on track.

Absolutely; flying takes time. "Vectoring" relies on your distance, the level of activity in the airspace, the room for manuevering (EX: there may be military controlled/restricted airports in some rare casses), and other factors like weather. It works perfectly fine for me. Remember, if you are in a constant and/or rapid descent, you cannot really reduce your speed.

My solution is to look on the GPS for approaches that have inital approach fixes.  Then I request an approach using one of those, ATC will clear you direct to that fix and you avoid the vectoring.

davysims, just wondering how you do that, are you using default ATC. Iknow how to use GPS APPROACHES  but not sure how to get ATC to clear you to those fixes thanks

When you get your initial call from ATC about your approach it should give you an option that says: "Standby-- [select new approach]"

You then just select the approach you want to do, ATC will vector you to its first fix then let you do your thing.
