FSX does not run properly on GTX295, i7 2,6gh, 6GB RAM

It can probably be helped, but since I am a dummy when it comes to computers, I cannot quite figure out what is causing FSX to run... not so smoothly.

Can FSX run maxed (with some tweaks) on this system? Or does it even needs a better rig?

GTX295
Core i7 2,6Gh
ASUS P6T motherboard
6Gb RAM
1,5 TB HDD

I run it at 1248x1024 on Vista  64Bit Ultimate.

The frames are pretty low when FSX is at medium-high to high, but I find it difficult to believe that it wont run properly on my rig.

Got any tips? They will be more than usefull.

Thanks in advance.

There are no computers able to run FSX at its real max settings yet.
However, you computer should run it quite well with quite high settings.
I suggest you to read the sticky topics on the installation of SP2, more specifically the parts that describe and explain the various tweaks. You'll have to test yourself to find correct values.

I took a look at it, but a lot of it is abrakadabra for me.

If someone would like to help me tune my system, tweak it etc. that would be great.

If I try to tweak it, i think ill end up blowing it up...

No, you won't blow anything.
And even if you damage the FSX.cfg file, just delete it and FSX will create a new one next time it's launched.

There are only 3 tweaks that are important:
- the bufferpools, that depends on your video card behavior
- the Texture_bandwith_mult, that depends on your video card and your CPU
- the autogen tweaks (..._MAX_TREES_... and ..._MAX_BUILDINGS_...) that must be set depending on what you see in your sim.

You just have to make some tests to choose your values, depending on the results you get. It takes some time but no money :)

The problem is, it doesnt even run nicely without any autogen on.. :(

You're not going to blow anything up.

Read the first 4 posts in this thread. This is to tune your system correctly:

Use this to install FSX and tune it correctly:

I already read that, but it doesnt make sense to me.

I have the Dutch version of Vista, and to make things worse, I have no idea what all those terms and stuff mean.

If I did, I would probably be able to tune it myself  ;D

I already read that, but it doesnt make sense to me.

That's why someone took the time to write this guide so everyone can enjoy the simulator with better looks and performance...

Just do what it says... It's simple to follow even though you may not understand everything.

It will make a big difference.

What is a real MAX setting for FSX? Is it all sliders right, with everything turned on or is there something beyond that.

The fsx.cfg has to be modified to increase the level of detail radius and the amount of autogen. It doesn't matter how high you write those numbers... Hardware can only push out what it can push out, and that's nowhere near the max that FSX can produce...

Lock your frames at 30!

I'm also not an expert but I think GTX 295 is dual core video card but FSX only utilizes 1 core.. so you could be at 512 instead of 1GB with your video card.

If somebody knows better.. please correct me.

And yes... read the guide! Follow it! It's the best thing out there!

Regrettably its true.  See if you can change the GTX295 for a GTX280.  That way you will get a full gig of RAM in use on the videocard and it does make a difference.

Unfortunately in Moore's Law terms FSX is out of date in that it does not allow SLI or full threading.  So the GTX is wasted.

However I am one who has found it extraordinarily difficult to get FSX to run smoothly on an i7940 clocked to 3.3ghz and a GTX280.  I still can't figure it out.

To use NickN's test I have more than enough fps so why isn't it smooth?

I am going to do two things.  One, go back to an earlier restore point in case the problem is an add-on, and second I am going to delete the fsx.cfg file and have it rebuild itself and do away with nHancer and other aids until I slowly rebuild it all.

Just out of curiosity...

Is here anybody who runs his FSX on i7 processor and GTX video card and is getting smooth performance? Just say "Me" or something.
Thank you!

I've seen several posts of i7 owners that were VERY happy about the performance. I don't remember if it was here or at SimOuthouse or Flightsimworld... maybe all of them.

Absolutely.
And to be more precise:

- the default autogen max setting correspond to something like 4000 trees and 4000 buildings per terrain cell (a cell is a part of the terrain, I don't remember the exact size). You can push this to 6000 each in the FSX.cfg. Of course, your CPU and video card will melt like lava.

- the range (distance) of high detail terrain visual can be doubled in the FSX.cfg. Of course, your CPU will melt like lava.

- the default ground textures in FSX are 1 meter/pixel (one pixel of the textures covers 1x1 meter square on the terrain). Some addons are about to be released with maximum ground textures precision in FSX: 7 centimeters per pixel (each pixel covers 7x7 cms square on the terrain). But it's just for a very limited area, else your CPU, video card, RAM and hardisks would tranform your computer in a volcano :)

So no, there are no computers able to run FSX at its max settings, and there will be no computers able to run it at its REAL max settings for a while :)
