I have the standard copy of FSX, which is Directx 9. And my graphics card is Directx10,so I appreciate that it will only run at directx9 in line with FSX. Is there any way to update my FSX to directx 10.

In order to run in DX10 mode, you have to have Vista, because DX10 does not exist in Windows XP.
If you are running FSX under Vista, then you simply have to activate the "DX10 preview" in the advanced graphics options of the game.
Of course, you must have installed either the SP2 or Acceleration for this option to be available.

Just a word of caution.

FSX was never really meant to be used with DX10. It was build and tested using DX9.

When you do use DX10 you will find that prolly 90%+ add-ons out there does not work as it should with DX10 if work at all.

I have tried the DX10 and DX9 and DX9 provides much better satisfaction then DX10.

:)

Unfortunately this would be fine and dandy if I HAD a Directx 10 preview box within FSX to check. But I have no box anywhere within FSX to check for Directx10 to work. So I was asking how to upgrade my FSX from Directx 9 to Directx 10. Is it an update or a patch or what. Or is it simply that FSX cannot be updated to Directx 10.

Since you have stated that you have the minimum requirements in OS, hardware and software, the only conclusion is that for whatever reason FSX thinks you don't have proper support.

Frankly, you're time would be better spent not worrying about the "DX10 Preview," since it is simply not all that it could have been anyway...  ;D

I thank you all for your replies. My system is

Intel core2duo 6400 2.133mg
2gb ddr2 ram
Ati Radeon X1650SE 1024mb
Vista Premium
And CPU running between 24 to 45 degs under load.

To which I am going to install 2x1gb ram to up the ram to 4gb, for which I know FSX will only see 3gb.

This exceeds minimum requirement for FSX + Accelerator. And I am achieving frame rates of between 14.8 and 76+. And if this is the best I can achieve for my system running Directx 9 , then I will leave things be. And before you say this graphics card is not Directx 10. it clearly states in the ATI Catalyst Centre/system information that this is a Directx 10 card.

It's DX10 compatible, but not DX10 compliant.
That means that it works on Vista with DX10, but it's not able to do anything related to DX10. It does only DX9 related stuff, that's why you can't see the the DX10 preview checkbox, because it's not a DX10 card.

It's exactely like the difference between FS9 port-over planes and real native FSX planes. Both work in FSX, but only the native FSX planes have the FSX-specific effects like bloom, self-shadow, bump-mapping etc...
