8.5 hours later, then...

Hey guys,

Not sure what's going on, but recently it's more often than not that my FSX stops working. Like today, I did a full 8.5hr Zurich-JFK, and literally at 40ft before touchdown the computer stopped and it was reading my C: for like 5 minutes. Eventually it had some error reporting message, but it was pretty frustrating not being able to complete the last bit of this rather long journey.  :-/

What do you think it can be? I was running REX, FS Passengers, and WOAI at about 50% traffic. That's it. No other scenery add-ons. The ride was smooth and problem free the entire way, until just about 4 miles before landing it was stuttering every 5 seconds or so.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Barb  :'(

Hmm...that's pretty strange. When I put graphics+traffic on full about 50% of the time the sim gets a little 'jerky' during t-off and landing and occasionally it will stop running.
I find that when at lower altitudes these things tend to occur more frequently. Strange, but it seems to be the case for me.

Could be memory useage.
Press Alt Ctrl Del to view memory/ CPU useage and free resources.

As for a simple cure - if it IS memory - if you want to make a long flight using the addons you have mentioned, I would suggest a fresh reboot & stop any services you do not need running before starting FSX. Allow as much free RAM as possible.

:o 8 hours in FSX  :o that's a real FS Enthusiast
I'm agree, and Ive seen it the computer goes black out and its start to read something in the hdd, after few minutes it tells you to report to MSFS and restart the game , I have 2gb ram Memory It happens to me In rarely occasions too, But take a look , Thios happend to me when I'm in 3d studio max and Gmax and have FSX open simultaneously and If I open Photoshop or Pain Shop pro Sometimes happens, Make sure you are not running at the same time another program while using FSX..
as Pete saids Hit Ctrl+alt+supr and see the memory rate use also check in  Aplications what else you have running besides FSX.exe

Thanks for all your replies. Alejandro during my 8.5 hours I also went out to the library, had lunch with some friends, went for a run, etc.  8-)

I wasn't running any programs other than REX, FSX, and FSpassengers. Oh, and I was using the MD-11, which I guess always slows everything down. We tried the ctrl-alt-del thing but that was when I got the report error msg, and it shut down FSX before any of those numbers were available -- my husband also mentioned some memory thing; is that a common problem?

Aye,

first the bad one:

Your error description isn't very specific

The good news:
Never found an answer for api.dll, g3d.dll, symmap.dll,.... CTD's

Hi all

I too get the occasional FSX has stopped working, or something along those lines. Nearly everytime it does it, I begin to get stutters shortly before it quits. And like others, it seems to happen most often when on approach.

I suggest saving your flight from time to time while enroute.

From what I've read before I'd say this is a memory issue but I'm not 100% sure on that. Have you changed the pagefile like on Nick's list?

You are not alone!
Too much mesh, gauges, textures, AI and a confused tower?

II wish some one took me serious this time about this one ,this might be important

In another forum I read that to increase the pixels size for the gauges , Example

[Vcockpit01]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=1024
visible=0
pixel_size=512

On my old computer, FSX was running like cr*p due to my components (Pentium 4, Geforce 4, blah blah.. running FSX smoothly even at Minimum graphics was a dream). At certain times, I would get error messages (that I don't remember anymore) that would shut down FSX due to the low amount of RAM (512 MB on the computer, 4 user accounts, around 100 other processes running INCLUDING FSX and XP.. you get the drill).

I'm happy that my new computer uses 3048 mbs of my 4096 mb RAM. More RAM really helps FSX, especially if you're running many other processes or programs in the background or in FSX itself.

I don't know why FSX crashed just as you were about to land though.. must be annoying.

I suspect a memopry issue also.

I would run a memory testimg utility to see if your memory developes an error after a while.
