Windows 7 x64

Hello,
I'm currently using XP home x32. Would there be any performance benefit to moving to Windows 7 x64?

I don't think anyone will know until Windows 7 comes out, lets all hope its nothing like Vista.

        I guess I should have been more specific. I downloaded the Windows 7 beta x64. I was looking for a little feedback before I went to the trouble of installing it.

You are asking about running a beta OS and if it will improve your performance. The only improvement is the fact that the version you intend to run is x64. It will provide the exact same performance as Vista 64, no difference.

So if you are planning on relying on W7 for everything in your computer .. keep this in mind: You are and switching to a BETA OS and it will present issues for you to deal with


If you are not computer savvy I suggest you stay where you are till its official

                                       Like everyone, I'm looking to squeeze every bit of performance out of my computer I can get to run FSX. As far as XP is concerned, I've always been happy with it when it comes to being a stable OS. I'll have to take a look online for 64 bit versions of XP. Thanks.

The advantage with the 64bit OS is the true expanded memory use. With a 32 bit OS there are restrictions

If you are thinking going from 32 to 64 is going to give you 10FPS more.. then dont bother because that is not where the advantage is.

        I pretty much ignore frame rates anymore. It's all about smooth and visuals.

Well, there is the fact that XP x64 days are numbered. If you wish to use it make sure it is the full SP2c version and not some old SP1 disk. Its always best to install a OS clean with its SP's incorporated into it.

I have XPx64 V64 and W764 and XP x64 still beats them all. Not by much with W7 but there are some issues with W7 still and FSX. Just be aware that it is a testing beta (RC my a$$) and it will present challenges to deal with.

SP2c was released for XP Pro to resolve a problem where they were running low on product keys due to it's long life. You'll only have SP2c if you bought XP with SP2c otherwise SP2 is the just fine.

The only reason I mentioned SP2c is because that is the current product being sold at most retailers if one was looking to purchase and I followed up by simply saying it is best to have the SP's incorporated into the OS before installation... therefore SP2 is all that is needed. Anything further will be added through Windows Update in which the user should manually go there and make sure all critical updates are applied. I would not rely on the automatic update system. I shut that down anyway and check once a month myself.

There is no "All New And Improved" OS being released.. what MS is doing is recycling Vista by fixing it, adding more crap and getting rid of the name that cost them dearly. Its what I call a fire sale.
