I started working on updating the default Cessna 182RG from FS2002 that was converted to FS2004. I would like to edit the model. Does anyone know if it is possible to convert a .mdl file to a gmax file? If not, is there another C182RG gmax file out there. I also need a virtual cockpit. This project will be for FSX and will be uploaded to simviation when completed.

The model is actually the default one from FS2002. I would just like to tune it up, and make it more FSX compatible. I don't think that copyright infringements would be a problem in this case. Right know if I try to preview it in the opening screen in FSX, the model doesn't show up at all. The one I am working with is just updated flight dynamics and such. The model isn't changed. I wouldn't use their repaints. I would make my own.
Now, while searching, I came across this program that converts mdl to dxf. It's called mdl2dxf4. Can someone find a download link for me. It is not guaranteed to export correctly, but i want to give it a shot.
Thanks,
Brandon

As far as I know, you can't... Or atleast it is a different type of MDL file. Just for this exact reason - Stops you from taking someone elses work.
Might be wrong, but I think that is how it goes.

While there are some arcane ways to "decompile" a .mdl file, none of them are worth spit!
What you wind up with is a solid mess of mish-mashed mesh with NO animations, NO texture mapping and absolutely NO way of sorting out the individul parts and naming them correctly.
Honestly, it would take far less time and effort to start from scratch and build your own model... :o

I've never played with any decompilers.. I've got my hands full using that mental energy getting the most out of a model MAKING program.
Fr. Bill is correct.. by the time you'd get some sort of useable model out of it.. you're still looking at sorting through it.. re-animating it all.. and mapping textures to it. I have a hard enough time mapping ALL the parts of a model I've made myself. I can't imagine trying to make sense out of someone else's work.. It would be a larger task than just learning how to make the model yourself.. from scratch.
That said.. I'll admit to having used other peoples models for reference and ideas. FreeFlightDesign has had Gmax source files available for years.. I've never "taken" parts from those.. but I have certainly experimented with them.. So I suppose a decompiler would be good in that regard.. But again.. you get into the gray-area where it's probably easier to just learn it yourself..

Thanks for the replies guys. I will probably just model my own when I have time. Anyone have any panels, sounds, etc. for a C182RG?
Thanks,
Brandon
