[color=#000000]Just to make it clear why this has happened...
DXT5 textures have an 8-bit Alpha channel. There is a lot of greyscale information encoded within those 8-bits.
DXT1A textures have only a 1-bit Alpha channel; black or white is all that is allowed.
All of the detailed greyscale information is completely wiped out by converting DXT5 to DXT1A format!

When FSX first came out this was a very popular way to try and squeeze out extra FPS, it was one of the first tweaks discovered. I had the same problem as you, decided that the weird textures weren't worth the few FPS I got and reinstalled FSX.
All you can do now is reinstall, when you do, see if you can find those textures (pain in the butt) and save them as a backup. Then, if you wish, try installing the pack again and replace the DXT1 that have problems with the DXT5 you saved.

Ok, I grew fustrated with all this and decided to uninstall, re-install FSX all together.
This time I only fired up the sim with AlacrityPC and guess what. I have better quality textures and just about the same frame rates as with the texture conversion thingy.

In that case, I'll simply recapitulate my earlier advice:
"In the future, be a bit more discriminating about making mass changes to your default installation..." ;D
