So it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks.

This morning I was in the Avsim MSFSX forum and ran across the following

Kingfish,

Glad I searched and found this post. Another old dog also has good, no excellent, results with AM=12.

Soloed in '56, flew 52s, Oracle DBA/cobol programmer,etc. Still fly @ 70.

Now can use max auto/scenery at 30 locked and have never been this smooth even with ALL the tweak/tweak/tweak.

Only time I have to reduce to 75% AG is with 767 or at 450KIAS at 2000 in the 105.

Many thanks!!

Jack S.
:)

i7 920@ 3.8
3Gb Mushkin 1600@ 7-8-7-20.
EVGA 260 O/C 10%.
no bufferpool

PS: this test was done in rain/clear/fine/CB/fog weather. UTX,GEX,REX,FEX.

nice!! finally now i understand what these AM numbers mean!!

so, making the translation to binary a simple table would be:

for quad cores:

12

I am old and toothless, close to being put down, so may I ask a naive question?

I have an i7 940 - which at the moment is almost 1000 miles from where I am writing this so I have a few days before I can try your prescription.

With the i7 can I use the simple AM=12, 14 or 15

Or must I use the more complex AM=223,224 or 225 given that there is a virtual core associated with each of the 'real' cores?

The 12,14,15 set will likely work best on the 940. You probably don't want to use hyperthreading; just stick with the primary 4 cores.

Since posting this I have also been following the "unlimited fps" issue and have adopted that "bat" file. I am also now using the "buffer pool" changes as suggested here,

http://orbxsystems.com/forums/index.php?topic=9908.0

and am seeing smooth 30 fps with no stutters in virtually all situations.

Very happy with the the combination of tweaks; and feel like the sim performance is finally approaching my quad core running of FS9.

When running more than FOUR threads on a Core i7 then HYPERTHREADING MUST be enabled for any gain. Keep in mind hyperthreading rises temperatures thus it may be faster to have a few hundred more MHZ with Hyptherthreading off.

Be warned.  Enabling hyperthreading through the BIOS really does shove the temps up.

If you have a state of the art cooling system then go for it.  Otherwise try the other tweaks first and come back to turning hyperthreading on.  And remember there is following SP1 and 2, some hyperthreading in FSX but it is minimal ..  nevertheless in load terms it is important over multiple cores.

THERE IS NO GAIN WITH HYPERTHREAD AND I7

I HAVE DISCUSSED THIS WITH PHIL TAYLOR AND THIS HAS BEEN TESTED OVER AND OVER

FSX IS NOT HYPERTHREAD AWARE AND WILL PROVIDE NOTHING TO THE TITLE.. NADA, NIL, ZIP

except HEAT

IGNORE what you read about it helping.. anyone who says that is seeing things

Thanks Nick for the clarification.  All that I know is that I have the i7940 at 3.4gigs with the temps below 80c ...  then turn on hyperthread in the BIOS and watch them go through the roof and totally disable the setup.

So for me hyperthreading is off absolutely.
