The "visual flight path" that {I think} you are referring to, is for the Glideslope just to show you where you need to be, as in a set of boxes.

In order to get said boxes, circles, "AIDES" .... Find a chart for the Airport that you going to land at and get the ILS FREQUENCY for that runway.   Put this in NAV 1 STANDBY for now.

When you are about 20 - 40 miles from the airport of landing, switch the numbers in NAV 1 / standby.  (standby numbers move to active / vice-versa) ------ you are now locked on the Localizer.

... While flying VOR / IFR ... if you turn on the NAV 1 button on the radio stack, you will hear a series of "morse codes" -- this is normal as you are picking up the correct frequency and you are tracking the VOR/NDB/DME \ ILS.   (to use the "visual flight path" you DO have to have NAV 1 turned on, and tuned to the correct frequency)

hope this helps, if not just let me know and I will give you a more indepth step by step instruction including pictures.
