FSX ATC audio

I recently had a problem with the audio on my computer which turned out to be related to a broken headset that I use instead of speakers.

After replacing the headset, I got all other audio fine. I went to start a flight using FSX SP2 standard on my XP SP3 system and initally went to an airport and selected the ATIS.

Have you messed at all with the 2 voicepack files?

Those file date/size look proper.

During your trouble shooting did you make any changes to your system settings/configuration for the Realtek AC97 audio (before spotting the headphones as the problem)? If so, you could try a system restore point prior to that.

Also: Run DX Diagnostics to see if it reports any problems-(click Start>Run>type dxdiag in the input line and click ok). Run all  the tests on the Sound and Music tabs. From the Sound tab you can also experiment by adjusting/lowering the Acceleration to see if that helps.

Did you change the airport .BGL file? that always gives me wierd ATIS information.

No, no change in the bgl.  The last time I used FSX was before I had the other audio problems that turned out to be related to my headset.

The file sizes/dates appear ok. The difference is that the sizes I posted are from the file properties windows (right click file, select 'Properties'), while yours are from the Explorer-Size column.

There is no way I know of to extract files from the DVDs. I think it would take a 'Repair'.

I thought I mentioned I tried the dxdiag thing.  I lowered the acceleration and the results are identical.  No change in the ATC.

I believe I'm down to the repair option.  I just hope not to lose all of those addons and logged flight hours.  But here goes.  I'll report back.

I already stated that I removed everythng FSX from my computer. Even add on planes, saved flight plans, everything. I deleted every FSX registry entry, etc...total wipe. Then I reinstalled FSX completely fresh. When I fired it up, there is the same dang problem with the ATC/ATIS.

Note that every other sound I play on my system works fine, wav's, videos, mp3s, system sounds, everything. The only thing chopped up is FSX's ATC/ATIS.

I am going to perform one last test. After I got FSX, I wiped FS9 off my drive but I still have the discs. I am going to reinstall FS9, and if that ATC works...then I'll know it's only FSX. Will report back on that.

I really want to solve this. The ATC files have extentions of .QVP. What in FSX runs those files through the sound card?

Anyone?????

There's darn little I know for sure here, but what you see as QVP is actually GVP.

FS ATC (introduced with FS2002) does not use 'text to speech'. The .gvp files contain recorded .wav words/phrases and the code to produce the appropriate text and .wav output. At runtime the text is displayed and the .wav output is assembled using bit and pieces from the recorded voices.

OK, then I stand corrected, they are GVP files, but still why would some of the words come through and not all of them?  And if I put up a clean reinstall, why do they not come in completely clear like they should?

Is there a way that I can run the GVP files using something like media player to see if it's intact?

I still can't believe this can't be solved.
