Deleting unused default aircraft.

FSX including FSX Steam version.

Deleting unused default aircraft.

Postby macca22au » Wed Mar 18, 2009 10:53 pm

I would like to go through and delete, or at least backup unused FSX default aircraft.  For instance with PW and FW aircraft I no longer need any of the default general aviation aircraft or any of the default jets.  The gliders and warplanes are of no use to me ...  whoever flew a combat jet with unlimited afterburner.  I would like to put them aside so they no longer needed to load and be present in Simobjects/airplanes.

But I would like to do it without stuffing things up.  Your help would be appreciated.

I think the simplest way to do it is to remove the model from the simobjects\aircraft folder and move them to a safe backup location.

I think the simplest thing to do is NOT to delete them.
You will not earn a single second of load time if you delete them.
You will mess up your missions as well.
I would strongly recommend you to keep them all.

Don't forget  also that often addons are aliased to default aircraft items.

If all you want is for them not to show up in the selection screen, simply edit the aircraft.cfg files and comment out all of the ui_ entries!

Code: Select all
//ui_manufacturer="Cessna"
//ui_type="C172SP Skyhawk"
//ui_variation=" Blue, Gold"
//ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop"
//ui_createdby="Microsoft Corporation"

In fact, you can do an entire aircraft.cfg in less than 10 seconds:

Find "ui_"
Replace "//ui_"

Done!

Thanks everybody.  Yes I am aware that a number of the better payware aircraft do use default gauges, and I would not like to lose those.

However if I will use Fr Bill's solution so that I can remove the unneeded aircraft from the selection screen which becomes increasingly cluttered and complex as add-ons are installed.  But leave the content untouched so the aliased parts can be used in freeware aircraft.

Bill, I am like some others a little curious.   Are you a real life ordained priest in the episcopal or catholic church, or are you a father figure in flightsimming ...  or both.

also, if you move/rename only the .air file, you will also cause the aircraft to not show up, while leaving it's content there for aliasing (i think)

Cheers

Oh, some missions have default planes that they use. If you make that default plane go away, it will use another one.(That has happened to me)
Same thing with deleting a variation or livery. :( :( :( :'(

Thanks Father for that insight into your life outside of simming.  You are ordained into a church not held in high regard by Rome, but I believe in the end it is "by their deeds you will know them."  I won't start a religious war in a flightsim forum, but let me say, full strength to your arm.

Meanwhile thank heaven you know more about FSX than I do, and I keep on learning.
