Flight Simulator x is running on quite low framerates, I get about 7-15 when over big cities and airports. This is on medium settings with a few things on high all trafic (boats other airplanes and cars) on 50% autogen on normal (the one between spars and dense) Resolution 1680x1050. Some parts like the carrier missions for example runs at 25-40(!) FPS. is this just the game or is it something with my pc? I have a intel duo core 2.8 ghz HD4850 512mb 4 gig ram Vista 64 bit. I already have the autogen tree replacer, plus the DX1TA (I think its called that) textures replacements. still with no luck over flying over land.

Anyone has some tips?

Like all the beginners, you should start by reading the sticky topics in this section, they will learn how to configure your computer and how to configure your FSX to get the maximum performance.

This is me on my other account. I did not do everything in that specific other but I'm an advanched PC user I know how to optimize my pc/games.

I've done a full defrag, scanned for virus/spyware unselectet unnesecary start up items in MSconfig + tweaking vista trough the regirsry + other tweaks to decrease Vista's RAM usage. plus many more tweaks.

My sytem is rather mediocre compared to what is available running FSX but I must admit. My FSX experiece is very smooth.

I had to do a lot of tweaking, especially the FSX.cfg. Added some bufferpools, reduced buildings & trees.

Also got REX, which in my opinion works far better then default with respect to performance.

So, FSX is not running poorly because it is a louzy program, it is proberbly running poorly because a system is too weak or the user have not optimized it to the max using the correct methods.

If FSX was a poor program then everyone one here would have complained about performance, which appears not to be the case.

I am very happy with FSX and even more happy knowing what a joy FSX will be when better tech comes along in the next few years

Read more carefully then.
Those topic do not only describe how to configure your PC, but also how to configure FSX and how to tweak it from the FSX.cfg file. Those are certainly the information you're needing to increase the performance of your FSX.

I just set FPS at 28 and forget it. My system seems to run very low rates without stutters. From there I play with the sliders and surprisingly some higher settings work better than low.

It's obvious that you did not read the instructions or follow them step-by-step. Setting up FSX is NOT the same as setting up for other games, no matter how advanced you are.

Go back, follow the XP set-up and then FSX set-up word for word and see if it makes a difference. Just defragging doesn't help. Did you use O&O and follow the order Nick specifies? If not, you didn't do anything that will help FSX.

The fact that you have set your sliders, traffic and autogen the way you have means you have not done anything that the guide suggests. You can not maximize the performance the way you've done it.

I have Vista. But I will look trough the guide once more.

edit: I diden;t noticed a link in that file on what settings you should have FSX and its running fine now with 30+ fps on airfields now!

Well... since you are an "advanced PC user" and it seems you know what you're doing, keep playing with the system settings yourself until you get what you want.

When you're done failing at that, do a full reinstall of your OS (because you've already ruined it by changing too much in the registry) and go through the list as specified without missing a single step.

I KNOW what I'm doing and if you would have read my previuos post you would have read that I've missed a link that goes to ingame FSX settings, i've read and applied it and like I said i get 20-30 fps in game.

I'm glad you got it running good now. As Steve said, setting up for FSX isn't the same as for other games, even if you know a lot about computers which I believe you do. But remember that FSX isn't a game, it's a sim and it works much differently. As Nick Needham (NickN here on the forums) put it, "you have to think out of the box to tweak FSX."

That's also the reason that in many cases higher settings will work much better than lower settings. Much of it is due to the priority system that FSX uses to run things.

True, FSX enginge is very differnt then that I'm used to.
