Fortunately, it's not me. I have a friend on the other side of the country who just got a new system. So far all the info I have is that it's an HP product using an AMD processor 2.5G (duo?) w/6G ram and Vista Premium64. Video card is NVidia 6200 512 ( yes, it's an old card) and 500G drive
He installed FSX and SP1 and with all settings at the lowest he only gets 1 to 4 FPS in the default Trike flight.
Took over his system remotely and cleaned up some of the garbage, UAC, firewall, malware scanner, disabled some of the services like indexing, etc - pretty much along the lines of Nicks guide but winging it from memory.
He ran a space defrag with O&O. Still getting a slide show.
Last night he installed SP2 and I told him to follow Nicks guide for defragging so we'll see when I connect with him tonight.
He had downloaded the 181.20 driver from NVidia. I'm wondering if an older driver might be better for that card. The earliest Vista64 compat driver on NVidia's site is 175.19.
Tonight I'll uninstall and reinstall new driver using DCPro, which I'm sure he did NOT do.
Prior to switching to the new machine he was running XP on an old 2.4G processor with the same card and he was getting 15 - 20 fps generally. At least for him it was flyable.
Any suggestions on next steps.
Should I have him retrace Nick's guide step by step or just continue from there.
My guess is that there is something I missed that's running in the bg that's really stealing cycles - he should be doing better than 1 to 4 fps.
Thanx!

If you really want to see what processes are running, and how much resources they are using, I highly recommend "Process Explorer" (
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96653.aspx). It gives you way more info than Task Manager does.
One note about it, when you see "svchost" in the list, hover the mouse over it and it will give you the list of processes that instance of svchost is hosting. Right click any process and go to Properties. Tons of information there. Also, right click the column header and select some columns. I usually add CPU History, Private Bytes, Peak Private Bytes and Private Bytes History.
Have fun!

Vista alone will eat that alive
Thats even slow for FS9

:-/ What do I know from AMD - I'm an Intel guy! :)
So, what do you think his options are, Nick. Would a better vid card give him a chance or is he just SOL? He just bought the system so he's stuck.
Thanx,

FS9 would be his best option
It could use a better video card however thats only going to go so far before its a complete bottleneck for the CPU

ok two things -
the model is HP 6645F with an Athlon X2 (B) 4850e 2.5Ghz
I noticed in the specs on HP's site that it has onboard video. Knowing my friend, he would not even know how to change that setting. *IF* he had the onboard enabled AND the 6200 running - would that account for some of the problem.
If I can squeeze 10 - 15 fps out of this turkey he'll be ecstatic.
will nHancer work with the 6200?
Thanx!

follow the guides Vic including the tuning... thats all you can do
With a HP tower I bet the thing is running all sorts of useless crap in the background and probably has a resource killing AV on it to

According to the hp website the 6200
is the onboard graphics..
well, that and it says the 6200 is a GeForce 6150SE.
That is unless of course it was "upgraded" to the 6200

Top two links should give all that info...

I have a similar rig. I tried to install SP2 and recieved the warning that I would need a 8600 or better graphics card. I take that to mean that would be the "break even" point.
As it is, I do get good frame rates as long as I stay out of big cities with busy airports (Ranges between 10 to 25 FPS, with best FPS with no weather (clouds are nice, but good FPS is better.) Also, back down on the AI traffic. The only things I have cranked to the max are "Global" detail for the aircraft I'm flying. Everything else is a compromise untill I get a big buck vid card.

ChuckD - yes, it is an added video card. :)
Boikat - SP2 installed just fine for him. I had him put a call ito HP TS - maybe they can get him a different (better) system.
Difficult to remotely tweak a system from across country. ABefore I spend too much more time, I'll wait and see what HP has to say. Don't know what they told him when he bought it.
I just need to watch what processes are running because, even tho it's a slow system, I would think that 10 - 15 fps with minimum settings would be doable.
Of course, I've been wrong before.

Success! Sent him an old nvidia 7800 pcix card that I had lying around and he's getting a steady 20fps with 'decent' settings. Didn't recall that the 6200 he was using was a PCI rather than PCIx. Once he swapped for the 7800 everything changed. Got him all tweaked and set up and he's a happy camper.
