So how realistic is FSX

I've been playing with the realism settings on "Hard", and just wondered how that stacks up to real life, especially with the 737s and 747s.

That depends on how realistic you're striving to be. In some ways, it's actually MORE difficult to fly a sim plane.. especially big jets.

If you just blast around.. joysticking your way through the air.. it's hard to say.

If you fly by the numbers, it requires realistic effort on your part... and it takes a realistic level of concentration and piloting, too.

I guess you have to be more specific... some consider a landing that doesn't set off crash detection as a good landing.. when in reality, it would have had their pilot's license taken away from them (lord only knows what the virtual passengers had to survive DURING the flight.. or how many ATC guys wanted to ring the pilots neck..lol)

A good way to determine your skill is to buy FsPx.

It releases flight reports after each flight to tell you how good you are.

Tells you the fpm on landing, pitch on landing. It also will penalize you for starting the engine without beacon lights on first.

Penalize you when you fly above flap speeds, infact you can blow you flaps of when above flap speeds.

You can have tyre blow outs on insane landings and many many more!

Without something like that IMO one will never know how good you really are wrt realism  ;)

I'd like to see how my landings rate, but the other stuff is beyond my league. I suck golfballs at math, and don't understand all this V1 V2 crap. I usually fly IFR.

Therin lies the problem... You're wondering about realism and you're flying filed instrument flights (in jets no less), without basic piloting knowledge and skills..

Park the jets..  fuel up the C172 and go here   :)

Many things can be harder in FSX.

Ie., if you're banking, and you need to flick a switch, it can be hard to pan to it, and flick it, without messing up the maneouver.

But I guess, that's more a limitation of flight sims...

:)

have had a licensed airline pilot flying in my set up and he was quite impressed. He also helped me calibrate my controls so they are more realistic to the real thing. He flew and landed a 737-800 perfectly, first go.

I'll bet his approach was a thing of beauty  :) (and he probably obeyed all altitude and airspeed restrictions without even thinkging about it  8-) )

That's what's so amazing about MSFS. Fly it by the numbers, and it rewards your good piloting, with a realistic simulation .

I think the term "realism" is being taken many different ways.

What I mean by realism is the aircraft's handling. I don't need to know V1 V2 through Vxyz or all this other technical stuff when I can take-off and land a 737 just fine (for sim standards).

My brain is already being filled with Japanese and Korean, don't need to add a truckload of math and numbers to it.

Well there lies the problem, if your not interested in flying it by the numbers the way real pilots do, then who cares if the plane is flying realistically. Your not doing anything realistic yourself.

Does the airplane lift-off realistically ? The only way to find out is to try it at Vr..

Does the airplane climb realistically ? The only way to find out is to try it at Vy or Vx..

Does the airplane descend realistically on approach ?

Or someone who actually knows how to fly real planes can say "yes" or "no" instead of throwing crap at me for not living up to your expectations of being a professional fake pilot.

The answers I've been given can only be understood by someone with real flight experience.

I'm getting upset because I feel like I'm showing up to a paintball game, then all of a sudden I'm expected to know military tactics.
