How can you do a 12 hour IFR  flight with out having to be there all the time to acknowledge ATC all the time?..If you can't is there a way of knowing excatly when ATC is goin to give you a shout? i've never done a long haul before only short hops like YYZ-MIA...i'm wanna plan a JFK to HKG trip but dont wanna leave it and come back every so often...any help would be great thanks.

A Pilot spends most, if not all of his time at the controls. So you should too.... ;)

I did a seven hour flight today, and I was near the computer almost the entire time. I usually don't do long flights like that, but I had a lot of homework, studying, and reading to do today. I did have to take several long breaks, but the sim was paused. I do all my flying, at real time, and at or near the comuter. I have done several flights that lasted over 10 hours, and even over 15 hours. Sometimes they would take a couple days, and I would have to save the flight, and continue when I had more time another day.

But anyway, when ATC hands you over to another frequency, acknowledge, but don't contact the next controller. You won't be penalized, and when you're ready to continue ATC communications, simply contact the controller and follow usual communications.

Just ignore atc, they will cancle the ifr flight. When you jump back on goto the flight planner reload the flight plan but when it ask to goto airport selct no, then goto atc and request an ifr plan and they will contiue from where you are. try a short flight youll figure it out.

Well set it up on the gps and let if fly then instead of getting your IFR cancelled when they ask you to switch over to a diffrent frequency just never respond onto that frequency until you need to.

Also make sure that you have everything set before you dont respond to the other frequency.

Hope this helps. ;)

tcco is right. There is a lovely bug in FSX that allows you to follow ATC instructions and then keep them off your back.

If you are directed by ATC to change frequency, acknowledge, then hit the number, usually 1 in the ATC dialogue panel to tune the new frequency, but then do not hit contact the centre.

Nothing will happen.   F-16s will not come up an buzz you.  You are still alive in the tiny mind of FS.

When ready (10 hours later when you wake up) hit contact ...  you may be a continent away from that centre, but FS will then come up with a new option to tune the correct centre.

Then you do not have to try and sleep with the stern tones of ATC telling you that Radar Services have been terminated still ringing in your ears.
