Check your FSX "Effects" folder and see what "FX_smokeXXX" you have available.   I don't recall if the basic FSX has more than white, greys and black, so you would have to search for either an acrobatic plane with multicolored smoke effects, or a smoke effect addon (I think there's one in some "effects pack")

Once you have that, it's a simple matter of installing the smoke effects in the "effect" folder, then editing the [smokesystem] in the f/a-18 .cfg by changing the "fx_smokeXXX".
