Does anyone use FS Autostart or Cacheman utilities prior to or during FSX? Was wondering if those utilities are useful or just another wasted download in a futile attempt to increase performance? ???

Highly recommend FSAutostart. It's easy enough to configure although you should allow 10 or 15 minutes and it really does free up considerable resources by closing down a large number of background services and programs that you do not need while running your sim.
Use it for both FS2004 and FSX (but you have to switch over in the setup interface which takes about 10 seconds)

I will upgrade my comment...
if you run 1gig of memory or less and you do not know how to set up Windows properly for performance FSAutostart could help a bit, but overall, naaaa
Otherwise, its a total waste
cacheman??? dont make me laugh.. that software went to full crap status when WindowsME and 98 went bye-bye
dont bother.

Thanks guys, after doing a little bit more research I came to the same conclusion that both were a waste of time....

Got to grasp at all the straws you can when it comes to hopes of increased performance with FSX right? ;)

REGISTRY MECHANIC
After it is installed and registered so you get all the features, start the program and go to OPTIONS

Wow, Nik, that's pretty comprehensive. Any chance of making this a sticky for all those who didn't cut and paste this stuff? ;)

Great minds, krigl - I just copy-and-pasted this!
Whether I'll have the b*lls to attempt to actually do it is another matter! ;)
I tried using FSAutostart when I was first using FS9 but there seemed to be little difference. I then doubled the memory from 512mB to 1gB and that really made FSA redundant and now I don't use it. What did make a difference was disabling autoplay on my external drives, which stops the momentary stutters caused when the system polls the drives every few seconds to see if there's anything in there.
It also really pays to make sure that your startup process doesn't clutter your memory up in the first place.

May I just noObly ask how you disable autoplay?

Be very careful about what you see and hear on the net... what I have found is most tweak sites and forums include 1 good tweak with 15 very bad ones.
Nick and all,
That has certainly been my experience over time. And your absolutely "dead on" info helps to prove that. Your suggestions I have seen have
never fit into that category of "worthless or harming" that I have seen.
Guess that comes from listening to a person who is a top end professional in the computer field. ;)
best,
