750 mb, or Gb HD?  You must mean Gb, right?  :o

Glad to hear the i7's are working the way they should be. Enjoy your sim!

I have just installed an i7 940 which is the lower of the two gaming chips, the other is the i7 9650,  The 96 runs at 3.2 gigs and I would love to have one, but at the moment it is $1 to 1.5k dearer than the 940.  In six months I know that these prices will have been well and truly readjusted downward.  However although the 940 is only 2.93, I have found it important to read the literature.  Its internal architecture is such that it out-performs older ie one generation,  3 gig processors.  (Look at the 3D Mark comparisons).  FSX has never run so smoothly for me with sliders well to the right.

I am going to combine it with a GTX 280 videocard, after which I am going to sit on my hands.  I do not over-clock so I accept that I will be running  on a second level, but up-to-date high end system.

For me that is when Enough will be Enough.

Congrats guys.  You're into a whole new world with FSX.  See how it reacts to different settings, what car traffic level it can handle, night flying with UTX intersection AND street lights.   All that stuff.  Is light bloom possible now?  I can't wait to read your experiences with this.

I have a i7 965 running at just over 4GHz

If I designed GEX autogen on this system.. you guys on 3.6GHz quads clocked out would be looking at 15-20FPS

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although I have not had time to do all my testing...

i7 is the FSX king, no doubt about it

This is the best news I have had today ;D

With my new water cooled Core i7 965 system ordered and ATA hopefully before Christmas. 8-)

I've been comparing MSFS X on two machines, both running @2.8Ghz. One is a Nehalem i7 920 @2.8Ghz,and the other is a Penryn Q9550 @ 2.8Ghz. both are running with 4GB of ram, and I'll try to figure out some worthwhile benchmarks. It isn't so easy to compare FPS because the FPS for the Q9550 swing back and forth over a much wider range than the FPS for Nehalem. I assume this is due to better memory bandwidth for Nehalem.

The Nehalem i7 computer definitely produces smoother flying. Long live the new king!

4?

you have to be running 3/6 matched sticks of memory to be using quickpath in i7 correctly

3x1GB
3x2GB
6x1GB
6x2GB

the LACK of FPS swing is the perf

and you can not use FPS to judge the perf.. it just isnt possible with FSX

its about smooth flying at high scenery level with clear images and lotsa AG

RE II

PT6 is a good board as well and comes with remote OC LCD display

pro clockers gettin 4.2Ghz on 920's with that board

Nick:  I have the i7 940 running on the PT6 board with 2x2gig 1033 mhz DDR3 RAM.   Although I haven't clocked it at all, the fps probably hasn't altered much from the 6850 but smoothness has improved enormously.

I am about to have a GTX280 card installed which hopefully will add to the quality of the picture.

All this of course with the 'obscene' 3840 pixels of Matrox TH2G

Then maybe a little overclock based on those articles.

Perf in FSX is not about frames its about smooth and clear visuals

you should not have any problem clocking that a bit without installing a honking heatsink. With i7 a 400MHz bump is like clocking a Q processor up by a 1000 and I dont think you would have to raise the CPU voltage to do that.. perhaps a tad

It also has TURBO mode too which will clock things automatically however you would probably be better served doing it manually

I think between the i7 bumped and bit and the 280 you will probably finally get to a place of peace with your display preference

Now that you are on a real system you can run the settings I laid out here...

http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_p ... 607#149607

cept with your screen res you may want to back AL/GA traffic down to 49% and if you use UTX USA watch cars.. keep them at 8%

And I would also use Nhancer too

Love your tips Nick but can you add some details comparing your i7 to Penryn systems at the same clock?

I've used your tips on my P35 quad system @4Ghz to get smooth flight and sharp textures, took some work but your suggestions paid off.

So my question is what would a i7 upgrade at 4Ghz offer say flying over the Tokyo area RJTT vs my current system?
