New mobo, repair install XP, everything seems just fine but if I try to install nhancer on drive c - gtet error - service won't start and abort. If I try to install on drive E; it says install completed but when I click nhancer - nothing happens - quick hourglass but no load - no settings.

v2.4.2

Any thoughts?

Update .NET or reinstall it.

If it doesn't work try removing nHancer and .NET altogether and reinstall both.

Hmm- hadn't thought of that - will give it a try!

Thanx!

Make sure you have Net 2.0 and all the updates for it installed

If you still cant install Nhancer and run it something in the way of software on your system is blocking it

I still use the 174.74 beta driver for FSX and a 8800GTX

Make sure the Nhancer download or copy you have is not corrupt

EDIT: Wait a minute... you did a REPAIR windows install?

FORGET IT!

You changed platforms.. you can not do that!

Clean Install Windows from scratch!

Yup - bit the bullet - all is well now.

Another question - hopefully a quickie - since I changed drives, etc - went from a RAID 0 FSX install on 2 74G Raptors to a straight install on a 150G Raptor - ran O&O 8.6 and noticed that on the FSX drive there is a big section for the MFT very near the beginning of the drive. Didn't see this on the RAID volume.  After name & space defrag I have one or two lines of "data" followed by the MFT followed by the bulk of the FSX data.

BTW, the Rampage board is a beauty - lots of bells and whistles I can play with should I choose.  Thanx again

Vic

OK

What you are seeing is normal with the MFT and unfortunately there are only 2 ways to move that out of the data zone

1. Fill the drive with data till Windows decides to reconfigure the MFT based on the free space of the drive. If you have not installed FSX and all the addons to the drive yet, do that first and check to see if the MFT moved after a reboot.

2. Force a move of the MFT by using partition software and this is a bit tricky... What you have to do is use a software like Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director to SPLIT the drive into 2 partitions but MAKE SURE the partition with FSX on it only has about 3GB of free space left... then instruct the partition software to MERGE the 2 new partitions together using a dummy folder for the merge and make SURE you end up merging the new partiton INTO the FSX partition, not the other way around.

Once complete do NOT reboot again.. open O&O and do a analysis...

What SHOULD happen is a new MFT is written and it will usually appear OUTSIDE the data zone. If the analysis confirms that, RUN a SPACE DEFRAG to fill in the free space left by the old MFT and THEN reboot

Once back into Windows run the COMPLETE NAME DEFRAG and after a reboot the OFFLINE DEFRAG

that should move the MFT out of the data zone and yes, its a royal pain in the a$$

I wish someone would come up with a freeware MFT mover

Figured it was something like that.  :(

Make any difference if the MFT is before or after the data?

I know Vic

Its like this... the closer that data is to the outer edge of the platter the faster files are going to get across that buss

If you are like me and want that thing as efficient as possible,,., do the deed and once it is done you are pretty much good to go from that point on unless you add some massive addon later where the MFT is again in the data zone above where the new addon installed. You have to do the name defrag after a hug addon install too

Here is where I went through that with someone a long time ago using partition magic

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 8653/60#73

You can do the same thing with Acronis Disk Director although the proceedure is a bit different. The trick is to compress the drive freespace down so windows is forced to relocate and make the MFT smaller and before it expands it again, fill in the space with data in a defrag run

Its up to you Vic.. I cant put a speed value on that change but the science behind disk drives dictates the closer the data is to the outer edge of the platter, the faster the drive will be

The page file is easy to move.. just disable the page, reboot and verify pagefile.sys is not on the C drive.. run the defrag to fill in the space (if it was located in the data zone) and then turn the page file back on and run the offline defrag

First chance I've had tolook at your procedure for moving MFT. My FSX is on an 150G Raptor (F:\) and it has an 8G primary and 140G logical wher FSX resides.

ahhhh

you are seeing the normal layout for a XP install.. Either the Windows prep tool or another tool split the drive..

is the 8G before FSX and is it unallocated?

dont matter

Yes, you can just use that to do the job and merge it into the FSX drive making sure FSX remains a logical partition but you will always have about 5-50mb of unallocated space on a drive like that

I figured once you got off that nvidia board and got it tuned right you would see a good difference... that 9650 will just make that better

People just dont get it... you cant buy just any parts, not use them and not set everything up right... the value in what you are doing far exceeds a tick on a slider

LOL

well, got rid of the MFT the hard way. Partition Magic wouldn't let me merge the partition no matter what s I went to plan B. Copied files until disk was 96% full and Windows deleted the MFT completely. Deleted the copied files, defragged and all is well!

it did not let you create a partition out of the 8g space and expand it then convert and merge it?

strange

Did you verify the cluster size was the same because that will force the software to refuse the merge... probably should have mentioned that   LOL   sorry

oh well.. thats why I gave you the 2 options to use... whatever worked

:)
