System is XP and I am Admin.
Any thoughts?
Thanx,

Yes.. dont install the service when the install runs (deselect) because its only needed for admin rights on Vista

I think something else is going on here Nick - trying to determine what happened. Did my end of month backup, OO Defrag and windows updates and something in the updates hung my system. Had to go back to a restore point. Couldn't restore from backup because when I clicked Ghost, got the splash screen but nada. Uninstalled and reinstalled but nothing will display on screen other than splash. Tried running from CD - same thing.Noticed nhancer wouldn't display also so uninstalled and tried to reinstall and get the service error. Other issues cropped up - NOD32 takes almost 30 seconds b4 the splash screen goes away - used to be 4 or 5 secs.
All of my programs seem to work just fine except nHancer & Ghost won't display and therefore I can't use them.
Tried SFC - no joy
Going to try XP repair - if that doesn't do it, I'll wipe the disk, reinstall xp and maybe able to restore backup with Ghost then.
Strange day...

remember all the crashes you were having?
The main problem with overclocking is in rare occasions those crashes can create errata written to the system files and when that happens... poof
time to reinstall
If and when you do reinstall, make SURE you have set the system BACK to normal operation
Overclocking is ONLY done when the system and all software is installed and set up
Memory clocking stability issues will create more corruption issues than a CPU crashing.. why? Because memory is reading and writing to the disk.. CPU is simply processing and calculating. Althougg CPU not being stable can create the same issues, more than likely unstable memory will be the cause

Sadly I agree that's probably what happened. Just to be sure I'm double checking for spyware, etc but I keep my system pretty clean. Looked in the event viewer and NOD32 timed out starting, Ghost couldn't find specified file, even after reinstall and nhancer service couldn't connect.
I guess reinstall and restore b/u is the least painful alternative.

if I had any hair left I'd pull it out. I can't reinstall!! Tried 3 cd's - xp+sp2, XP+sp3 and W2k. Boot from cd - get to first Starting Windows screen and BSOD Stop 7b - all 3 cd's. Copied Recovery console so it is a boot option - select RC - starts to load - BSOD.
Reflashed BIOS back to known good one. Reinstalled earlier nForce mobo drivers.
I have a D partition - can't even get to it to install XP -
Chkdsk shows no errors - AV scan fine - Spyware fine -
And yet I can STILL boot into my copy of windows....
Getting frustrated - possible mobo going bad???
What am I missing? ( a nice quiet Saturday afternoon, that's what)

7B has a few different possibilites
Are you loading the ACHI or SATA drivers from a floppy when Windows install is started?... (PRESS F6 TO INSTALL 3RD PARTY SATA OR SCSI CONTROLLER)
are you sure they are the right drivers?
How far does the install get before the error screen?
Are you able to see the drive in the XP Install Startup and are you doing the FULL NTFS format on it for install?

Tried it both ways - installing the RAID drivers and not - install copies some files and says Starting Windows - then BSOD. JUst finished a long memtest - no errors. Now I am even unable to get into safe mode. Attached a different HD with a good copy of XP - BSOD. I'm starting to think the mobo has a serious issue - if it comes to a new mobo - other than the 680i - what would be a good bet for the q6600? I can almost walk to Fry's here in Burbank

missed your last question - doesn't get to the drives at all - can't format.

Thanx

honestly?
I would dump Nvidia and go with a good x48 board like this one if its DDR2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131284next choice down would be the x38
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131219either one
I dumped Nvidia boards when I switched to Intel a long time ago
EDIT: Make sure you are resetting the CMOS jumper after that BIOS flash and also be sure the hard drive type interface is correct in the BIOS
It does sound like you are having hardware failure.. another thing to try is pull all but one stick of memory and try install again.. if fails, swap sticks and retry

Think I'll take your advice and go with the X48. I'm not as knowledgeable as you but I'm no slouch either and I've exhausted my bag of tricks. Tried the mem swap, replaced drives, SFC, boot disk, etc - all seems to point to a hw problem and memory checked fine, I'd assume that if the CPU was bad I never would have been able to get it started in the first place - that leaves the mobo/chipset.
Spent 6 hours last night and started at 7am today - I gave it the old college try -
Dare I try restoring from a backup when I get the new mobo or would the difference in drivers cause me more trouble than reinstalling everything? I think I know the answer but had to ask!

ok - ordered the x48 and found a 150g raptor in san diego. Now have to read up on the mobo and setting up a clock for the q6600.

you could put them on this card if the motherboard has another PCIx16 slot available
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6816116042http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... ware%20BBUAny SATAI or II drive will run better on that than in RAID than any motherboard port and literally no CPU poling
as for single drives.. The Vraptor is a great drive but expensive
To tell you the truth.. I would need to poke around and see what is on the market now. From a 'single' drive perspective the SATAII 3GB/s interface is just about marketing.. a "single' drive can use that bandwidth in AV editing software but it will never run faster than any other single SATA I drive in FSX. The only way the SATA II bandwidth gets used is if you are running multiple SATAII drives in RAID.

These are not bad drives for the price
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822148288The 74GB Raptor will still be fater than that drive as long as its not more than 60% full.
Which is the problem..
at the same time, 2 of those seagates on that 3Ware SATAII RAID controller would be faster than 2 Raptors because at that point you are able to take advantage of the buffer and the bandwidth of the 3GB\s interface
