The human eye can only see 24 FPS. Setting it to unlimited is not necessary. It is a waste of system resources. If you system can handle it set it from 24-30 FPS. There is no need to go higher.

What are your specs.

Actually that depends on your system and you wont know untill you try. Some systems perform better on unlimted, why is anyones guess, but i leave mine locked at 30.

2.2 GHz Quad Phenom
Two Radeon HD3870 crossfire connected
3 Gig PC 6400 memory.
Should I leave resolution at 1280x1024x32?
My problem is that with the settings maxxed out and frame rate around 45, sometimes the game freezes to the point where I have to reboot. But after reboot everyhting is OK.

With 2 3870's max everything (including resolution, for a 22" it 1680 1280 is a 19" I think) so if you have a 19 inch leave it or if you can go higher then do so. You shouldn't have a problem at all with FSX following you have SP1 and SP2 installed. Yes FSX does crash sometimes, if you run vista make sure to run fsx as admin even if you have UAC off.

Actually, there is a difference in what appears smooth to the human eye between film and 3D graphics. Film in movies has indivdual frames that have slightly blurred motion, and this allows for smooth vision at 24 fps. However, a computer shows still images with crystal clear edges, and therefore the frame rate must be much higher for the human eye to see the same thing. 60 fps appears much smoother than 30 fps for this reason.
I recommend looking at this page towards the bottom:
http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_5.htmlThere is a whole section explaining this topic, and also a cool little program that allows you to see the difference between framrates.
To answer bubbleheads question. I found better results setting my framrates to unlimited, but that was my PC. Yours is very different from mine (intel v. AMD and Nvidia v. ATI), but it should still pefrom quite well in FSX. I suggest try setting unlimited and fly a flight, then set it to something like 30 or 40 fps and try that same flight using the same conditions. Just see what works best.

I can see the difference between 30 and 60 FPS, bigtime. In FSX I'm running my 2.2 quad phenom as hard as I can and I get no higher than 30-ish.
But FS9 screams! I lock it in at 60 and it stays there. I flew FS9 on my laptop for a while and I could get 45 frames when looking up at the sky, and 25-ish when looking at the ground, and the difference is stark. On my OLD gaming machine, the best I could get on FS9 was 18 to 20 frames.
I REALLY see the 60 FPS smoothness.

If you have a LCD monitor then your screen resolution and FSX resotution should be set to the screen default, for two reasons , Quality and efficiency. Saves the driver messing around trying to rezize on the fly.

...and don't forget if you enjoy using on-line Multiplayer for your Flight Sim activities you MUST LOCK your Frame Rate to 20 FPS to reduce bandwidth involving multiple Players, prevent getting thrown off the Server, and prevent "stuttering" and visual Aircraft "leaping about" during the Flights. All very annoying for other Frame-Rate-Locked Users!
F...G-BPLF.... 8-)...!

It depends where you are flying if fixed or unlimited is best.
I stick to 25, as i cant be annoyed with messing abut any more. If i have a few stutters, so what, as it seems everyone has them here and then, ok, some more than others depending on system, and how well they have set up the system.
Spend some decent time overclocking/tweaking etc..
after that, enjoy flying!!
Next year i think we will all be able to have an experience,
If we spend the money and upgrade to nellie ;-)
