Once again, a "NO sound" Issue. I need an expert

Postby loomex » Sat Aug 16, 2008 7:10 pm

I have deleted and rebuilt the Fsx.cfg file, used the repair function, I have uninstalled and re-installed and still I have no sound. No opening music, no ATC, no engines, no farts, no nothing, period. My sound card works for everything else on the damn computer.

When you re-install, do you custom install, or let FSX install itself?  I'm curious, if you custom install, does it ask you to ID your sound card, driver? (I've never custome installed, so I don't know how in depth the "custom" is)

I'd be surprised to ever hear a fart in FSX...

Go to sound settings, and make sure it recognizes your sound card.

Does it sound anything else ,music mp3, etc?

Its strange ,never seen problems with the sound in FSX,I do have a creative sound blaster card ,Very good one BTW ,But I don't use it ,I use the on board system which I think eats less recourses (I'm not sure ) anyway both sound good to me,I leave the PCI one because I need the gameport  ..

tell me if you have a normal performance of your driver system,you hear music? place a cd in the dvd or cd room

Okay, I'm going to grasp as many straws as I can think of (It's early, the cafine hasn't kicked in yet, so there will not be too many, and may sound silly..)

Is the "Sound" directory present in your FSX?

Is your FSX "Sound" directory loaded up with .wav files?

(General Question for anyone to answer) Does the "Sound" contain it's own .cfg?  The one in my folder starts out,

**.....Bristol Centaurus sound files for Blackburn Beverley copyright R Pegram......**
**........modified for Airspeed Ambassador by Hans U. Hermann, D-GHHH simulationware...**

Somehow, I don't think that should be there....

Assuming that the sound folder is present, and chocked full of .wav files, and if there is a cfg file, it's the right one ...Moving right along.

All your other games, music players work, so it *has* to be the sim...

Did FSX *ever* have sound, or was it dead from the "get-go"?

What does the FSX.cfg look like?  The very top of my CFG starts with the sound parameters:

***********

[SOUND]
AmbientUIMusicVolume=-6.000000
SOUND=1
SOUND_QUALITY=2
SOUND_LOD=0
UISound=1
AmbientUI=1
SOUND_FADER1=0.500000
SOUND_FADER2=0.500000
SOUND_FADER3=0.500000
SOUND_FADER4=0.500000
AmbientUIMusic=01_-_The_Mass

**********

...But that only appears to be for the UI music that plays during startup and aircraft selection.  I guess it would not hurt to double check the lines to make sure they are all "1".  I'm not sure if "ambiant" means "all the other sounds", so I guess it wouldn't hurt to check that.

That's all I can think of at this time o' day.

Yes, that.  I don't see a sound.cfg there.  Probably came from an auto-installed add-on before I learned not to trust auto-installers.   :D

It was working a few weeks ago. I guess the next step is to delete a few add ons that I have put in

That would (or should, I would think) reset whenever FSX was restarted.  Unless the "Q" key is bad on the keyboard. But I'm sure that's been checked too.

Check to make sure there is no volume slider set to zero or muted

bring up the configuration on the default sound device and check its settings.

Also, Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - verify the default sound device under the AUDIO tab. Check its properties and its speker configuration is correct...  and then bring up the advanced properties on the VOLUME tab. Click OPTIONS - ADVANCED CONTROLS and verify no slider is set to zero ot muted.

2 audio devices showing could also mean a conflict but not always. Sometimes you must ALSO set things directly within the configuration tool of the sound driver or EQ control.. same deal, look for volume level and speaker configuration and then make sure FSX is set to that same device

Ok, You guys have been thinking of everything to help me. Now your going to love this. Last night I was trying everything I could and suddenly, the sound worked. I haven't a clue what I did. This morning it was one thing at a time, then I think I discovered what it might been. I went to the main sound folder of FSX and double clicked on one of the wav files. When I did, windows media played popped up to play the wav, I got an error;
Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help. The file had an "X" next to it in the now playing area

I Closed the box and double clicked the file while it was in the "now Playing" and bam...it plays. I start up the sim and there is sound.

Now this question...what the heck is that all about?

Hmmmm ..... perhaps one of the wav files is corrupted ... or one of the sound apps like MM or WinAmp or WMP itself is corrupted and interfering. You might try installing an app like WinAmp to see if reinstalling might re-write some of the audio codecs.

it is just wierd. I did try to re-associated wav files with another progam (Irfan veiw) and got no errors when opening up an FSX wav. SO I did a shut down, restart, load up FSX and no sound, until I shut it down and open an FSX sound with Irfan. Guess I will get winamp and see what happens
