Installing airplanes etc with Vista

Postby Chris P » Sat Aug 16, 2008 11:35 am

I'm sure this has been covered before, so apologies right away, but I've been looking and haven't found a definitive answer.

I have just upgraded to a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and I'm having problems in working out how to add extra airplanes etc.

With XP it was a simple process of unzipping to a temporary folder and then copying across to the default FSX installation but with Vista and it's UAC this doesn't seem to work.

Airplanes that have their own installer seems to be OK but with unzipped files I haven't been able to copy across the folders. Copying/moving folders even with UAC disabled just doesn't seem to work. The copy process seems to work but when I check FSX there is nothing there but I believe it's getting written to the virtual store.

The only way I've managed so far is to create the required folders in the FSX installation and then copy the files from the unzipped location to the FSX installation. This with UAC disabled.

I have checked various sites on how to add aircraft etc and all of them, even here, talk about unzipping and then copying (in other words as I always did when using XP) but don't specifically mention any change to this process if using Vista.

I'd be obliged if someone could talk me through the BEST way to proceeed with unzipped files.

As a newcomer to Vista I'm still getting my head around it's various quirks so I can't be sure it's me not understanding what I need to do.

Thanks

I have Vista and haven't had any problems.  About the only difference between wht you do, and what I do may be a matterr of terminology.  After I unzip the folder, I "Copy-Paste" from the unzipped folder to the Simobjects\airplanes directory.

I guess one thing to double check is to make sure you've given yourself full admin authority. (But I'm sure you've double checkedthat already!)

Another oddity about Vista, if you add texture files, you can edit the unzipped cfg, no problem, but if you are editing an aircraft that you've already installed, you have to copy the cfg to the desktop, edit, close and save, and copy-paste back into the aircraft folder.

I made a video on how to download airplanes and this might help becuase im sure you already know how to download them but I run vista so hopefully this will help (its got my voice no typing instructions)

Let me know if it helps--I also have one for textures if you have a problem with that but im sure you already know that..

Thanks for the replies, very helpful.

After reading through and looking at the video I tried again but same result.

I then did some thinking and decided that I would try something. I had installed Teracopy just after I got Vista as I hadn't realised that I could get the file command menu up in Windows Explorer. I'm still finding out the quirky nature of Vista and sometimes it frustrates me to hell but I will persevere.

There were several very good reviews of Teracopy so decided to give it a try and it seemed OK.

Anyway, decided to uninstall it and lo and behold copy & paste and dragging all now work as expected.

Don't know what it was about my system but, whatever, it seems Teracopy was the culprit.

Thanks again for the help.
