Generally speaking, yes. Depends on altitude. As for certain planes having the sonic boom, it usually comes as an effect with the plane, tho I believe you can add it on. Maybe someone else can jump in with the link for the effect.

Search the download database.  I think there's a sonic boom in the misclanious of FSX or FSP.  It works in FSX when installed properly.  You have to add the effect to each aircraft.cfg file that you want the effect to show on.  You'd have to study the F-14 Tomcat (the DL that has the "tiger stripe" as one of it's textures) to see if you cna make it "display" at mach 1 instead of when you hit "I" if you install in in your "smokesystem" of the .cfg.

Mscl FS2004, page 2, Multi effects pack.  If I recall correcyly, it works in FSX.  If not, download the BAS Grizzly.  Once you properly install that, you can look at it's .cfg file and see how to add the shock/compression wave effect to any supersonic aircraft.

And no, you do not hear the "boom".  I've never heard taht effect, but I suppose, in theory, one could be made.  I might look into that (Note, the pilot would not hear the "boom"  About the only time hearing the "boom" would be realistic is during "flyby" view or "tower view").
