many of those tests are on game AA and AF and I for one will not run FSX like that

If I did i would have a shimmering stuttering mess

no one runs the sim on 0AA and 0AF either


and not one of those test show the 640 or 768MB versions of the 8800 series cards which have the 384bit memory buss but he has no problem listing other older cards... smells like marketing for NV

Tom's has a knack and a flair for getting attention and I rarely place much of any trust into thier reports due to the marketing kickbacks they are well known for

So the information in those tests appears to me to be very misleading especially to those who are not tech savvy and only read FPS result numbers


The older 8800GTX hardware will do it if you have the CPU and memory bandwidth to go with the video ability.

Nothing in that chart is surprising... including the sales pitch for high FSX FPS if you buy an new expensive Nv card and fast processor system

it's no secret FSX is CPU bound and the better the clock and CPU type, the better the result which is what I posted last June in the harware forum sticky

Discussing it is even better.... however I can see after I re-read my initial post it may have come off as something other than what I meant due to my bias about Tom's reports.

I do apologize as it was not my intent to clobber the messenger!

In my honest opinion. It is even worst for us "Dont know much" people to see aces/people who know what they talk about write posts that seems like they want to rip eachother apart.

I mean attacking reviewers and making statements of a BS and nonsense will be taken as offence by someone liking the site.

It is practically impossible to build the perfect system getting advice from multiple "Know hows" cause you don't know which way.

When I build my rig I got one question on 2 respectable sites with replies form 2 respectable helpers and I'll tell you. The answers were worlds apart + without mentioning names to the helpers said who ever told me that knows nothing etc..

I find the "Do it yourself, fail and learn yourself" method appears to satisfy me more.

I do appreciate Nick's dislike of BS marketing. That is the very thing that leads to "Hard to find true and non-bias" advice.

uh, I didnt attack anyone. but it sure felt like I was getting attacked.

I still feel that article has value for the 3 reasons I stated, ymmv but you shouldnt attack the messenger. if you really have issues with Tom's, take it to the Tom's forums and not cack on me.

I appreciate the apology. From my perspective, it feels like every time I want to make a positive contribution, because I am the MS/Aces/FS guy everyone takes out their favorite axe and grinds it on me, no matter how many times they have already done so. It gets tiring.

Now, I know that wasn't Nick's intent here, and I have accepted his apology. I am just explaining how it feels on the other end.

For instance, on another site, a poster threw in my face that he runs FS9 because FSX RTM perf was so bad on this thread about FSX benchies. When I asked to stay on topic, he insulted me. Then apologized to the forum, but not to me because "I should be able to take a little criticism". And told me I was off-topic. Well, FSX RTM wasnt my watch,SP1 was my first release. So how about them fairness rules? How about being on topic and discussing the post? How about being an adult, mentioning your bitch once and moving on instead of acting like my 3.5 year old and repeating the same thing over and over every time you get a chance?

That's what is like on my side. It does make me wonder why I bother a lot of the time.
