Just wondering, when flying on line with FXS, do youneed a head set with mic or can you just use a mic and speakers to hear

Speakers probably will not work because your mic will pick up everything coming out of the speakers and interfere with what it should be picking up. The first time I tried something that needed voice input I tried it this way too, but it just didn't work, the headset was necessary.

By all means, use a mircophone. If it is recent, it is probably a condenser with ambient noise reduction so it will only pick up your voice.
Also, you're only pressing Caps to talk periodically so background noise isn't constant.
I would only suggest turning your engines sounds down, so you can hear your controller better.
