ATC Menu Population & AP controls

Postby Draco3 » Tue Apr 29, 2008 10:37 pm

Hi All,

I have done a search and as yet not sure if this is a bug or whether or not it's something that I haven't stumbled across as yet, so thought why not post it up.

During the flight all the instructions are displayed on the ATC menu (turn left to there, go that heading at the height etc. etc.).  Now when I have finished with that flight and do a different flight, i.e. a different plane in a different location I find that the new flight loads with the previous settings.

For example if I had the AutoPilot on with the headings set at whatever, the new plane at the new location retains all this information.  So when I start a new flight the AutoPilot is engaged so have to hold the brake while I turn everything off and get it back to normal.

Also the ATC menu is still populated with the previous instructions that were provided on a previous flight.  Anyway to clear the logs automatically when doing a different flight altogether.

Obviously I can close the application and start it again and this will clear the logs, but I would have assumed that FSX would have cleared these up when doing a different flight.

Set everything on the plane as you wish, then go to the flight planner and set it for a new flight.  This should override the current settings.  When asked to set the plane at the source or whatever it asks say no.  Then you should be where you left off with the GPS set up as you wish and the plane ready to roll.  If you wish a different source the answer to the earlier question should be yes.  You could try 'reset' from the FSX menu but I`m not so sure it will do as you wish.

See the difference not posting a large pic and researching before you post makes?  Never cut off the hand that feeds you.  People are prepared to help and will go out of their way if you meet them part way  ;)  I only have one arm in use at the moment but think nothing of going off searching for info for people in trouble.  Have fun and enjoy, I`m hoping to fly again soon too.....

What I do (in the never-ending spirit of realism), is end each flight like a would in a real  airplane.. Shut everything down, and turn everything off before leaving the cockpit. Part of the fun (for me) is going through the shut-downs, and start-ups. That won't clear the old ATC communications, but if you're still using ATC, you'll fill that screen and get well past the old stuff, in no time.

Its so easy to say it after the event but thats what I was thinking as I rushed off earlier, been the docs this am, had to go see a Russian Shotputter Phsyco Physiopherapist from Hell who doesn`t believe in slings or pain killers this afternoon, so I was in a rush!  No wonder she let me in early "because someone canceled at the last minute", the manic laugh should have given the game away.  Only 5 more visits then I can go somewhere else for the next 7 (nearer home-10 miles away to this torture chamber). :'(

But, believe me when I say part of the experience is taxiing to the gate/park, turning everything off and especially the opening of the doors.  If I do make a total muck up occasionally (usually as I`m watching something through my real life window or similar) then their is no taxiing, turning off or door opening.  It just does not feel right or satisfying at all.  Nicely said Brett, once again.  Now, I just need to get flying again with two arms..... ;D

I had a feeling that's what you were getting at, so I just elaborated.   :)

Nice touch with the door, too. I do the same. I even do a spot-view walk-around before opening the door and entering the cockpit... checking control surface deflection pretending to look for potential problems; like bird-droppings near the plane (warranting a much more thorough inspection of potential nest sites  ;) )

Taxiing is realistic too..  I'll test the brakes, re-check the DG and altimeter setting.. try to catch sight of the windsock from inside the VC.. double check radio and nav settings, cycle the flaps,  etc..

And of course a realistic run-up, testing both magnetos  ;)

It might seem tedious to some, but I figure I'm simulating flying an airplane.. and the surest way to have a real flight end badly, is to take short-cuts.

On top of all that...  I'm "simming" before I even fire FSX up. If I don't have sectionals for the flight I plan on taking, I'll visit www.skyvector.com to get any needed data (nav-aids, airspace, etc.)..and then over to http://adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov/ for en-route TAFs (I always use real weather).

I've little doubt that this all keeps in the right frame of mind between real flights  8-)

Brett;  from way downunder in Australia, thank you for those two links.

I may have mentioned that many years ago I spent a very happy year in Victoria BC and flew a C172 around the islands, Seattle and Portland.

So with UTX and the rest, I get great enjoyment flying these areas on FSX.  Now I can print out the sectionals and a completed flightplan, already marked on the charts.  Magic.

Many  thanks.

Hey Reider:  turn ATC into a small box - just adjust the corners like any other window -click on the top bar even if it is hard to see and then it becomes an ordinary window.  Once smaller, there is only room for the most recent stuff.

I make it small and put it onto a separate screen with the kneeboard navlog and GPS.
