why screen freeze?

I don't really expect an answer to that general question but - like most people, I try new drivers when they come out in the never ending search for improvement. Lately, namely the 174.70, 174.74 & 174.93 drivers in both the beta and modded (XG) formats cause my system to freeze (sort of) during a flight. Anytime from 5 minutes to an hour into a flight the screen will blink, freeze and blink every 30 seconds or so. The loop gets broken because if I move the mouse, nothing will happen for several MINUTES but it will eventually move. If I hit escape and wait long enough I can usually end the flight. Most times, I just hit the reset button.
I've monitored temps and memory - nothing out of the ordinary.
Just curious as to why one set of drivers will crash for some and not for others.

You are almost playing Russian roulette with five bullets here.
Just because a new driver is released does not mean you need to install it, and stay away from Beta versions as they are almost always full of bugs. I can only hope that you uninstall the old driver before you install the new if not your computer is so confused it does not know what to do. Unless the current driver is giving you problems let it alone.
Ever heard the old saying if it is not broken do not try to fix it. That applies here. All you are doing is creating a he** of a headache for your self. Try sticking with a driver that works and stop down loading every new release that comes out. 8-)

Normally I'd pass the same message to others but computers have been my business for over 30 years. I deal with beta's all the time and , contrary to popupar believe I find them no more or less buggy than a release product generally. You are correct of course, if you install abeta you are taking a calculated risk and depending upon your level of expertise, this is an individual call.
I'm more concerned with my original question as to why a set of drivers will work on one system and not another given that the two systems are similar. What is it in a driver that will freeze the screen, etc.
As I said, I don't really expect an answer but just posing the question as an item for thought.

Similar, not identical and that is where Betas may fail. I also work with Betas as a beta tester. Any little change in the hardware/software connection can and will often cause a knock on effect with the beta drivers.
If we didn`t sometimes put some faith in the beta software then we`d be a long way down the line waiting for everything to work. Sometimes its worth taking a chance, if only an informed one after others have tried it first.

Agreed. The 169 & 170 drivers worked just fine for me - so far the 169.13 are the most stable and best looking. THe 174 series has been a bomb *for me* as I know of many people who love them.
As far as FSX goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" doesn't really apply. The program is a moving work in progress considering the addition of various add-ons changes the entire picture and what worked last week may not work this week. And so we keep trying for one more tweak......
Vic
When it comes to FSX I quite agree with you there has to be one more tweak that you can use. As for the beta drivers from what I know the problem seems to come from manufacturers trying to solve a particular
problem with a particular system which is why they work for some systems and not others. I for one have not had much luck with beta drivers. Like you said some work and some do not. I have had better luck when they release the driver . Beta drivers can be a blessing or the worst nightmare you ever had. It is hit or miss usually 8-)

I had a similar problem..
Does it hangs ? I mean If and only If it hangs that you must reset the PC ,Could be the power supply .
I almost went crazy and I though it was the motherboard ,the cpu, the fan cooler ,I bough a better fan cooler, was nothing of that ,
If it hangs as I said , UNPLUG your computer , unplug very careful all the conectors the 2 that goes into the motherboard and the rest ,hdd, dvd ,cd 3/12 ALL , remove the screws from the cover of the POwer supply and remove the ones that holds the card with the capacitor rectifiers etc,
,get a brush and clean, If your enviroment is too wet or greasy ,find gasoline [glow=yellow,2,300]Be very carefull with this ,STAY AWAY FROM SPARKS ,..JUST WASH TO REMOVE THE CONDUCTIVE GREASE[/glow] .. Put in your backyard until gasoline evaporates all ( 4 Hours) assemble everything back and put it back , try again...
I worked for me and many other PC with the same problem ..
If when this problem does not freeze all activity in your PC ,you can see the Led HDD if it stay flashing , FORGET this post ,..OK?
