Have you checked the "Sound" settings in FSX to make sure your sound hardware is recognized and not set to "Default"?  I HAVE READ also that USB headsets don't work well in Laptops ...

I have a Sennheiser headset that was just a plug and go which works very well and it has USB/Rec-Mic switchable cord (I'm using the pink/green mic/audio leads). My buddy just took back to BB a USB headset for an exchange ..... but I have not had any experience with the USB sets.  :)
